Box Score HAYWARD – After stumbling on Friday night, Humboldt State used three strong set finishes to overtake Cal State East Bay for a women's volleyball victory.

The Lumberjacks reversed their fortunes on the second night of the California Collegiate Athletic Conference set of matches by finishing out the sets and 3-1 win over the Pioneers.

HSU went to a five-point lead to take the first set, 25-21, before netting the final five tallies for a 25-20 and two set lead at intermission.  Cal State East Bay moved out to an early four-point lead and never trailed the rest of the third set, 25-22.

Ashley Owen helped finish off the home team.  The outside hitter pounded four kills as the Jacks posted the fourth set's final five points for a 25-20 score and 3-1 match win.

HSU (7-4) improves to 2-2 in the CCAA with its second weekend split in a row.  Cal State East Bay (6-6) also moved to 2-2 in the league.

Owen wrapped up top hitting honors for the Jacks with 18 kills to go with nine digs and four total blocks.

Kaitlyn Dunaway was the other HSU frontline player with double digit kills of 12. The sophomore added a team-best 23 digs along with two assists, two aces and two total blocks.

The freshman middle blocker duo of Courtney Debrunner and Alex Hasenstab both had solid evenings.  Debrunner hit .571 with eight kills and no errors on 14 total attacks.  She also had four block assists.  Hasenstab belted seven kills and five total blocks.

Symone Hayden contributed three kills and 17 digs.

Setter Sam Siebert had another good outing this time against her former Pioneer team.  The senior dished out 44 assists, dug nine balls, hit two kills, helped block two attacks and laced an ace.

Kelci Renshaw and Colleen Noonan combined for 20 digs, 10 apiece and four aces.

In the opening set tied at 14, Owen killed a ball and the home team had a hitting error to make it 16-14.  From there, HSU went on a 6-1 spurt for a 20-15 score and never looked back as a Hayden kill finished the set at 25-21.

Trailing 17-13, the Jacks scored five of the next six points to tie the game, 18-18, with Owen downing two kills in the run.  The contest tied again at 20 before five consecutive Pioneers hitting errors finished the game, 25-20, for the visitors.
After an early 7-3 Cal State East Bay lead, Debrunner and Dunaway hit a late kill each but HSU could get no closer than 24-22 before the 25-22 final.

The Jacks ran out to an 18-10 advantage.  The Pioneers rallied with a 10-2 run to eventually deadlock the set at 20.  Owen took over to complete the HSU win with four kills of the final five points and 25-20 set victory.

HSU will now be off before having its second CCAA homestand of the fall.  It will host Cal State San Bernardino next Thursday, Oct. 3rd, and UC San Diego two nights later on Saturday, Oct. 5th, both starting at 7 p.m.
