UPSET SLIPPED AWAY
The Jacks saw their bid to end a 13-match losing streak to the Seawolves of Sonoma State slip away last Friday night in five sets. Tied at a set apiece, HSU held two different seven-point leads only to see Sonoma State battle back to prevail, 25-22. The Jacks regained momentum to take the fourth set, 25-23, only to run out of steam in the match-deciding set.
BOUNCE BACK SATURDAY NIGHT
Following a hard-fought slugfest the previous evening, HSU showed resilience on Saturday night. The Jacks played two of their best sets of the early season to open a 2-0 (25-17 and 25-16) lead versus the Gators of San Francisco State. The home team grabbed the third set, before HSU finished the night with the 25-19 fourth set.
BILES CONTINUES TO LEAD DEFENSE
The transition from junior college to a four-year CCAA team has been a fairly seamless one for junior Haley Biles.
The Sierra College transfer has 135 digs in 32 sets. Her 4.22 digs/set average rates fifth in the CCAA individual stat leaders.
Last weekend, Biles averaged 24 digs per night with a season-high 30 at Sonoma State and she contributed 18 against San Francisco State.
The third-year player also ranks second on the HSU team with nine service aces.
BALANCE ABOUNDS
After opponents were able to concentrate on a few offensive options last year, HSU is showing a great deal of complete frontline balance in 2014.
For example, the Jacks had all six frontline players attempt at least 16 total attacks with no one higher than 32 against Sonoma State last Friday night.
On the season, HSU has those same six players with at least 151 toal attacks and show each frontline hitter averaging more than 1.51 kills per set.
RENSHAW LEADS CCAA SERVERS
Being amongst the season leaders all last season, junior Kelci Renshaw has picked up where she left off as one of the top CCAA servers this year.
Renshaw has lined 18 aces in 33 sets for a conference-leading 0.55 aces/set. She had a career-high six aces against Cal Baptist in the third match.
BEWLEY SHOWING HER PRESENCE
Another HSU transfer Nicole Bewley is making her mark and showing her presence in the middle of the team's frontline.
After playing at American River College the last two years, Bewley paces HSU in both hitting percentage and blocking. The 5-9 middle blocker is hitting .298 with 61 kills over the first 33 sets. Her 25 total blocks and 17 block assists also leads the team in those categories.
Bewley had another solid week last weekend. She recorded 11 kills, hit .333 and blocked a season-high seven attacks against Sonoma State. She also added 11 kills with no errors in 25 attacks (.440 percent) and three solo blocks.
