ARCATA, Calif. – Bridget Daley drilled her team-leading fifth goal of the season with 24 seconds left in regulation to lead Humboldt State women's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
Despite heavy rain and wind throughout the match, the Lumberjacks captured their second win in the last nine days. HSU improved to 4-9-1 overall and 2-5-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Monterey Bay fell to 4-10 overall and 1-9 against conference opponents.
"Today was a fantastic win in a fantastic environment," said HSU head coach
Paul Karver. "Having that many fans in a typhoon was amazing. It was a real team effort, and it was the first time this year that the ball bounced our way. With seven points in hand and 12 left on the table, this will be big momentum shift heading into our game against No. 13 Sonoma State."
The teams combined for four shots in the first half as they adjusted to the difficult weather conditions. HSU outshot Monterey Bay 3-1 in the first 45 minutes.
Following the intermission, the rains picked up and so did the intensity of the two teams. Three yellow cards were awarded in the second half, and the Otters and Jacks tallied nine shots in the second half.
The game-winning goal came following a free kick from 35 yards out.
Alex Jenkins fired the ball on goal, and Monterey Bay keeper Christen Silkey recorded a save, but lost control of the ball. Daley took advantage of the miscue and put the ball in net from two yards out.
HSU goalkeeper
Alex Dumas tallied three saves in the win.
The Jacks travel to Rohnert Park, Calif., for a meeting with the Sonoma State Seawolves on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
