Women’s Soccer Battles Back, But Falls to Sonoma State 2-1

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Even though the Humboldt State women's soccer team was able to trim a first half deficit to one goal, No. 20 Sonoma State held on and escaped with a 2-1 victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match Wednesday afternoon.

Sonoma State outshot the Humboldt State 9-3 in the match.  The Seawolves opened up the scoring in the 13th minute when Sarah Lindborg found the back of the net off an assist from Sara Van Wagoner.

In the 42nd minute Sonoma State increased its lead to 2-0 when Jenna Viss scored with an assist from Holle Depina.

The Jacks cut the deficit to 2-1 when Alex Jenkins scored her third goal of the season in the 62nd minute off assists from Niccole Mullins and Haley Miller. Unfortunately, HSU was unable to find an equalizer over the final 28 minutes and dropped a 2-1 decision to the Seawolves.

"We responded well in the second half to what was the worst first half we have had all year," said head coach Paul Karver. "Alex Jenkins scored a fantastic goal. As frustrating as the first half was, we are more proud of the response in the second half, and we are looking forward to see what we will do on Sunday at Chico."

HSU wraps up the road portion of its regular season when it takes on Chico State on Sunday, Oct. 23.
