Volleyball Returns Home to Face SoCal Opponents

ARCATA, Calif. – After going 1-2 on its most recent road trip, Humboldt State volleyball returns to Lumberjack Arena for California Collegiate Athletic Association action against Cal State Dominguez Hills (Thursday, Oct. 27) and Cal State Los Angeles (Friday, Oct. 28). Both matches begin at 7 p.m.

HSU enters the week with a 10-10 overall record and a 5-7 mark in CCAA competition.

Last week the Lumberjacks dropped a five-set match to Cal State East Bay, earned a five-set win at UC San Diego and wrapped up the trip with a 3-0 loss to Cal State San Marcos.

"We're happy that this last 15 days have finally come to an end because we knew it was going to be tough," said head coach Kelly Wood. "We finally have an opportunity to get a little bit of rest as well as practice. We haven't even had much opportunity to practice as a team because we have been traveling nonstop and playing."

Dominguez Hills enters the week with a 7-14 overall record, and the Toros are 4-9 in CCAA play. Thursday's opponent is led by the duo of Tati Yandall, who averages 3.12 kills per set and 0.44 aces per set, and Cecelia Lucas, who averages 0.95 blocks per set.

"Dominguez is a team that plays a lot of players," said Wood. "You always look at the box score, and they have 12 girls going in the game. They are also really well coached, and they are going to pose a big challenge for us."

The Jacks will host Cal State Los Angeles Friday night. The Golden Eagles have a 14-7 record overall, and they have posted a 10-3 record in the CCAA. Kelsey Molnar, who is averaging 10.28 assists per set, leads Cal State Los Angeles on the offensive end. Alma Serna leads the Golden Eagles 1.27 blocks per set on defense.

"Los Angeles is a very talented team," said Wood. "They have two of the best middles in the conference. The key to being successful against LA is to serve them tough and keep them out of their system so that they're not able to run their middles."

Friday's game will be the annual Dig For A Cure night. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
