ST. GEORGE, Utah – Humboldt State could not handle the heavy attack from Colorado Mesa in its final match of the Dixie State Tournament Saturday. The Lumberjacks (1-4-0) lost to the Mavericks (1-2-1) after a pair of second half goals found the back of the net.
"For all the maturation we had last weekend we took some significant steps back this weekend," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "We don't make excuses, we expect to win every single game we play, and we just aren't there right now."
The two sides maintained a scoreless first half, but it was a quick second half goal that put CMU on the board. Amanda Wenzel hit top shelf in the 46
th minute to give the Mavericks the lead. With the Green and Gold pushing for a late goal, Colorado Mesa was able to intercept a pass and connect with Alexis Allard's head for the game's second goal in the 88
th minute.
The Jacks were outshot 16-5, forcing freshman goalkeeper
Alex Dumas to make five saves. Sophomore
Bridget Daley accounted for three of HSU's five shots.
"We have six days to prepare for conference and we will need to maximize every second we have to prepare," said Karver. "We have to trust the process and the system, if we do that we will win games again."
The CCAA season begins on Friday when the Jacks welcome Cal State San Bernardino to College Creek Field.
