ARCATA, Calif. – Alex Jenkins provided two goals and an assist as Humboldt State women's soccer defeated Cal State San Bernardino 3-2 in Friday afternoon's home opener.
"It feels good to get a win anytime, but it is especially important in conference play," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "To be able to train for four days and really get ready for this match was clear in the result."
A Rachel Figg goal 15:49 into the first half gave the Coyotes (1-4, 0-1 CCAA) a 1-0 advantage, but the Lumberjacks (2-4, 1-0 CCAA) answered the challenge.
Lindsay Stoner drilled a ball into the back corner of the net from 10 yards out to knot the game at a goal apiece. Less than five minutes later, Jenkins notched her first goal of the game. The San Bernardino goalkeeper bobbled the ball as she tried to scoop up an errant pass. Jenkins took the touch from
Madison Barnett and buried it in the goal with 6:21 left in the half.
The Coyotes evened the score a little more than 14 minutes into the second period.
Jenkins scored her second goal of the game, unassisted, with 26:04 left to play.
"As a sophomore, we have learned a lot about Alex and how to manage her," said Karver. "She works at such a high level and her contributions off the bench are massive. For her to come out with two goals and an assist today was fantastic."
HSU outshot San Bernardino 17-10.
The Jacks host Cal Poly Pomona Sunday at College Creek Field, and the game is set for an 11:30 a.m. start.
