ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State men's soccer looks to improve its conference record when it hits the road for the second week in a row. The Lumberjacks will take on Cal Sate San Marcos (Friday, Sept. 30) and UC San Diego (Sunday, Oct. 2).
The Jacks split last weekend's road trip when they topped Stanislaus State 3-2 Friday and then fell to Cal State East Bay 2-1 Sunday in overtime. The split has Humboldt State sitting at 3-4-1 overall and 1-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
"I thought that the boys continued to fight hard and play within the system we have been trying to implement," said head coach
Fred Jungemann. "Friday, things clicked for us. We got a few breaks, took a few chances and ended up with a positive result. Sunday, we played well, but the cards didn't fall our way. We actually probably created more chances than we have all season, but we just didn't click in front of goal and couldn't put the game away."
Cal State San Marcos has won two out of its last three and is 2-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in CCAA action. Andrew Stalboerger is the Cougars' leading scorer and has accounted for two of the their five goals this season.
"San Marcos has struggled a little bit, but I think they're better than their results show," said Jungemann. "We had a chance to watch them play a little bit, and they are definitely better than the results they're getting".
UC San Diego sits at 6-1-1 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play. Sam Palano leads the Tritons with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
"San Diego has been very good so far," said Jungemann. "They have only lost one game so far this season, and they are showing that they are a very strong team and an early favorite to do well in the conference."
