ARCATA, Calif. – Through the first weekend of games, the Humboldt State men's soccer team (1-0-1) has yet to be beaten. Standing in HSU's way next are Regis (1-0) on Thursday and Upper Iowa (0-2) on Saturday. Both games are part of the Pioneer Challenge hosted by Cal State East Bay.
"We had a really up-and-down preseason," said Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "So, this weekend was really a positive one for our young team to build confidence."
This is the first time the Lumberjacks have opened a season without a loss in their opening two games since Head Coach
Fred Jungemann's first season, during which HSU went 2-0-0 in its opening games. Of conference schools, only Cal State East Bay (2-0), UC San Diego (2-0), and Cal State Los Angeles (1-0-2) join the Jacks with unbeaten records.
Regis appears to the Green and Gold's toughest challenge to date this season. Following a 2-0 opening win against Newman University, the Rangers went from unranked to eighth in the first The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) regional poll of the season.
"Regis is very good," said Jungemann. "They play in a very strong conference and are perennially a very strong team in their region. It's going to be a good test of where we are at and all we can do right now is continue to build on that confidence we had last week and work hard."
Live stats will be available through Cal State East Bay's schedule.
