Women’s Volleyball Heads South, Looks to Establish Winning Streak

ARCATA, Calif.- This week the Humboldt State women's volleyball team will look to maintain the positive momentum generated with last week's victory over San Francisco State as it hits the road to take on two Southern California opponents.

At 7 p.m. Friday night, the squad will face off against Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, and at 7 p.m. on Saturday, they will put their skills to the test against Cal State Los Angeles, both California Collegiate Athletic Association matchups.

HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood thought her squad performed well in last Friday's loss against Sonoma State, one of the top teams in the conference, as a precursor to their 3-1 victory against San Francisco State on Saturday, which snapped an eight-match losing streak.

In the win against the Gators, Lauren Reid had 20 kills, while Jessica Lammers and Sarah Shively both registered 23 digs.

Regarding the victory against San Francisco State, Wood said, "We were able to hit at a higher percentage, were able to finish more points, earning our own points and limiting our hitting errors, which makes a difference. We've been trying to focus on that in practice; no one scores a point lately in practice unless you earn a point. If someone gives you a point, if someone misses a serve or makes an error, you're not scoring a point when we get into the competitive part of practice at the end. Hopefully that's registering with the girls."

Wood also acknowledges that her squad may be a little bit smaller in stature than most of the schools in the conference, which enhances the need for solid ballhandling and setting, and playing good clean volleyball.

Outside hitter Reid thought that on Saturday, "We came out with a lot of energy, and we did a better job specifically against San Francisco State at keeping it maintained throughout the set, from point one to 25." She described her squad as "pumped, because we're starting to see progress. We have so many new people on our team, and we've been trying to find out where everyone should be and who meshes well with who on the court, and it's exciting."

Looking ahead, the Dominguez Hills Toros are coming off a 3-1 loss to California Baptist on Tuesday, and stand at 5-7, 1-2 in conference. The Cal State LA Golden Eagles are coming off a 3-2 victory versus Dominguez Hills last Saturday and stand at 7-4, 3-1 in conference.
