Lumberjacks To Begin 2019 In Bay Area

ARCATA, Calif.---  Humboldt State's women's soccer team will begin its 2019 regular season this Thursday and Saturday, September 5 and 7 for a pair of non-conference regional match-ups in the Bay Area.  The Lumberjacks will face Academy of Art this Thursday at noon in San Francisco.  They will travel to Belmont, Calif., this Saturday for a 2pm match-up with Notre Dame de Namur. 

LUMBERJACKS:  Humboldt State, under the direction of head coach Paul Karver, finished the 2018 season with a 6-9-2 overall record including a 3-8-1 record in the CCAA.  Of their returners from last year including All-CCAA Honorable Mention selection Pikake Hix who scored three goals and had two assists for the 'Jacks.  Also back is Sabine Postma who scored two goals and led the 'Jacks with her four assists.  Her two goals were game-winning goals against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay.

Also back is goalkeeper Brooke Townsend who started in six matches in goal while posting a .750 saves percentage and a 1.62 goals against average.  Senior Katelin Talbert is back for her senior season after playing in one match in the 'Jacks' win over UC Santa Cruz last season. In 2017, Talbert earned All-CCAA honors for her 1.08 goals against average while recording 76 saves and six wins. The 'Jacks defense allowed 1.31 goals a game last season while posting two shutouts. 

HONORS:  Katelin Talbert earned Pac North All-Conference honors this summer playing for the California Storm as part of the Women's Premier Soccer League.  "We are very proud of Katelin and the steps she has taken to be a top level goalkeeper," said Coach Karver.  "Her confidence from this summer is already showing in training and we are very excited to have a goalkeeper of her caliber in our program."

ACADEMY OF ART: The Urban Knights went 8-8-2 overall last season including 2-7-2 in the PacWest Conference.  Leading the way for Academy of Art is Anissa Wilson who scored a team high six goals and added two assists for the Urban Knights in 2018.  She was named to the All-PacWest Third Team. 

Humboldt State holds a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams.  The teams last faced each other in a neutral site match in Turlock, Calif., on Sept. 11, 2014.  The "Jacks won the match 4-0. 

NOTRE DAME DE NAME:  The Argonauts went 5-13 last season including 4-7 in the PacWest.  Leading the way for NDNU are All-PacWest honorees Susan Whitney and Samantha Sanchez.  Whitney led the team with her eight goals in 13 matches.  Sanchez led NDNU with her five assists in 2018.

This is just the second time that the teams will face each other as the 'Jacks defeated NDNU 1-0 on Oct. 12, 2015 in Belmont, Calif.

UP NEXT:  The 'Jacks will continue their season beginning four-match road trip next weekend, Sept. 12-14 in Portland, Ore., for two matches against Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) foes in No. 22 Concordia (Ore.) and Saint Martin's.  HSU will face the nationally ranked Cavaliers on Thur. Sept. 12 at 7:30pm.  The 'Jacks will take on Saint Martin's on Sat., Sept. 14 at 4pm.  Both of the matches will take place at Tuominen Yard in Hilken Community Stadium on Concordia's campus.  HSU will have its 2019 home opener on Sat., Sept. 21 at 3pm when the 'Jacks host William Jessup at College Creek Field.
