Humboldt State’s Cross Country Announces The Signing of Harder and Smith To NLI’s

ARCATA, Calif.---Humboldt State's pool of young talent just got a little deeper. With a standout freshman class already on campus and poised for their inaugural track & field season, Coach Jamey Harris is stockpiling recruits to add depth and further brighten the future of the program.

Adam HandlerAdam Harder from Hanalani School in Mililani on the island of Oahu in Hawaii has been one of the state's top runners for 2 years now. He's amassed two Punahou Invitational wins, five ILH titles, and four top-three finishes at the State Championships, including the 2018 State Cross Country title. He'll look to add to that resume this spring before joining the Lumberjacks in August.

Carson SmithCarson Smith from Santa Teresa High School in San Jose had already been a two-time qualifier for the Central Coast Section (CCS) Trials in the 3200, but his breakthrough cross country season in 2019 really got Coach Harris' attention. After racking up wins in the Jackie Henderson Memorial and Monterey Bay Invitationals, a fifth place finish at the CCS Finals earned him his opportunity to run at the State Meet. He took advantage of that opportunity, running a lifetime best 5K time of 15:35 for 30th in Division I.

Coach Harris seemed pleased with how the recruiting class is shaping up as he noted, "These two are certainly capable of being impactful as early as their freshman year. We have a few other commitments who should develop into strong contributors, and of course we're not done."

Though they're from different states, the two have actually raced each other twice already. Harder got the better of his future teammate at the 2018 Iolani Invitational, but Smith came out on top at the 2019 Foot Locker West Regional. "They'll get to work together for the next few seasons," Harris said, with a smile.
