SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt men's cross country team faced a stacked Division I and II field at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday morning, competing in the men's 8K at Baylands Park ahead of the CCAA Championships later in the month.
MEN'S 8K
The Lumberjacks placed 18th as a team with a total of 449 points, using the meet as a valuable opportunity to test themselves against top regional programs including UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, and Southern Utah.
Junior Jacob Cosio led Humboldt with a 25:39.9 finish, setting the pace for the 'Jacks and continuing his steady progression this season. Senior Hunter Phillips crossed next in 26:04.0, followed closely by freshman Flynn Merriman in 26:33.5. Rounding out the scoring five were juniors Ryan Giglio (26:36.9) and Bobby Moncrief (27:00.0), both of whom worked together to maintain strong positioning in the middle of the pack.
Freshmen Cristofer Velasquez-Pati (27:13.1) and Spencer George (28:00.3) also contributed solid performances, while Thomas Becannon, Saul Jimenez, and Orlando Soriano continued to gain valuable collegiate racing experience.
The Lumberjacks averaged 26:22 per runner, improving on their team compression compared to previous meets and showing continued growth from top to bottom of the lineup.
The Lumberjacks raced against one of the deepest fields they have seen all season and that kind of competition will help Humboldt sharpen up for championship racing.
