Thomas Nelson and the 'Jacks Will host Lincoln This Saturday in their home opener
ARCATA, Calif---  After starting their season 2-0, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks will begin a season long six-game home stand this Saturday, November 20 with their home opener at 7pm against the Lincoln University Oaklanders at Lumberjack Arena.  The Oaklanders are coached by NBA Hall of Famer and member of the 75th Anniversary All-Star Team, Gary Payton. 
 
COACHING STAFF:  The 'Jacks are coached by second-year head coach Tae Norwood.  Coach Norwood has a .707 winning percentage during his two-years as a head coach. Norwood led the 'Jacks to a 4-5 record during the pandemic season.  He came to Humboldt State from Florida, where he guided Keiser University to a 23-7 record during the 2019-20 season including a share of the conference regular season title.  Keiser also appeared in the NAIA Tournament. 
 
On his staff are Andy Harre (first year), HSU Alum and former men's basketball player Colin Caslick (third season) along with volunteers Jason Hodges and Baron Parks. 

RECAP OF LAST WEEK'S GAMES:  Humboldt State went 2-0 last weekend in the CCAA/GNAC Challenge in Carson, Calif.  The 'Jacks opened up their season with a 70-69 win over Western Washington as Jaden Edwards made both of his free throws with three seconds left in the game to seal the win for the 'Jacks.  Edwards finished with his first double-double as a Lumberjack with 16 points and 14 rebounds.  AJ Sims paced HSU with 17 points while Will Johnson chipped in 12 points and Thomas Melonja added 10 points.  HSU came back with a 63-59 win over Simon Fraser behind Edwards' second double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  John Riddick added 10 points for the 'Jacks as he went four-for-four from the field including connecting on his only attempt from beyond the arc. 
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS: The Lumberjacks are averaging 66.5 points per game while giving up 64.0 points per game.  They are out-rebounding their opponents 41.5 to 33.0 rebounds per game.  HSU is shooting 42.9% from the field while holding its opponents to 40%.  The 'Jacks are shooting 33.3% from three-point land while their opponents are shooting 40%.  The 'Jacks have connected on 65.2% of their attempts from the line. Jaden Edwards is leading the 'Jacks with his 15.5 scoring and 12.0 rebounding averages. John Riddick is shooting a team high 71.4% from the field while Thomas Melonja leads HSU with his 42.9% shooting from three-point land.  AJ Sims and Melonja have connected on a team high three attempts from beyond the arc.  Bryce Mitchell has made all six of his attempts from the line.  Edwards is next at 80%.  Will Johnson has a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio with 10 assists and five turnovers.  He also leads the team with his three steals. 
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: In his first two games as a 'Jack, Jaden Edwards is averaging a double-double with his 15.5 scoring and 12.0 rebounding average.  He started the weekend with 16 points and 14 rebounds against Western Washington on Friday.  The junior transfer finished the weekend with a 15-points, 10-rebounds performance in Saturday's win over Simon Fraser.  Besides averaging a double-double, Edwards Is shooting 48% from the field, 80% from the free throw line and connected on one of his four attempts from beyond the arc.
 
LINCOLN OAKLANDERS:  After their game on November 9 against The Master's, Lincoln is 1-4.  They started their season with an 83-72 loss at Western Washington as Lewis Hays paced he Oaklanders with 22 points and Kaden Bradley chipped in 21 points.  The next, Lincoln lost 90-72 at Central Washington. Lincoln lost 76-65 on October 30 at Seattle Pacific with Julian Payton leading the way with 18 points while Jordan McGlory had 12 points. On November 9, the Oaklanders lost 70-61 to the Mustangs of The Master's College.  Bradley led Lincoln with 14 points and Payton chipped in 13 points. 
 
Lincoln is coached by Gary Payton, who played in the NBA with the Seattle SuperSonics, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat.  He was a nine-time NBA All Star, nine-time All-NBA honoree and a nine-team All-NBA Defensive Team.  In 2013, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. This year, he was named to the 75th Anniversary NBA Team.

IMPORTANT REGION GAMES:  Even though these games are non-conference games, HSU's first two games were important games for HSU as they were both in-region games.  Both Western Washington and Simon Fraser are members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). HSU's two other in-region non-conference opponents  are Western Oregon (GNAC) and Dominican (PacWest).  The 'Jacks will also face Lincoln (Calif.) and Simpson. 
  
22-GAME CCAA SCHEDULE:  The Lumberjacks will play a 22-game CCAA schedule beginning Dec. 2-4 when they host SF State and Cal State Monterey Bay. The 'Jacks will entertain the Gators on Dec. 2 and the Otters on Dec. 4.  Tip-off for both games is set for 7:30pm at Lumberjack Arena.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA:  Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena.  The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships.  March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5.  The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
  
UP NEXT:  The Lumberjacks will continue its six-game home stand next week with a pair of non-conference in-region games. HSU will host Western Oregon at 7pm on November 23. The Wolves are a member of the GNAC.  On November 27, Humboldt State will host Dominican at 4pm.  The Penguins are a member of the PacWest Conference.
