Cal Poly Pomona Shoots Past ‘Jacks

ARCATA, Calif—Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (7-4, 3-4 CCAA) shot 62.7%% from the field including going 50% from three-point land to key their 87-67 win over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks this evening in Lumberjack Arena.  Jaden Edwards paced the 'Jacks with 22 points.  AJ Sims added 13 points off the bench for HSU while Cam Timmons recorded 10 points for the hosts. 
 
FIRST HALF:  The Broncos jumped out to a 9-0 lead to begin the game.  A free throw by Phoenix Shackelford increased the guests' lead to double digits (15-5) six minutes into the first stanza.  A Keshawn Hall jumper capped a 6-0 run by the 'Jacks as they cut the deficit to 15-11 with 12 minutes left in the half. Cal Poly Pomona came right back and increased its lead to 26-14 on a field goal by Dane Erikstrup.  A three by BJ Standley increased CPP's lead to 40-22 with 1:44 to go in the first half.  A Jaden Edwards field goal off a pass from Thomas Melonja capped a 6-2 run by HSU as the 'Jacks cut the CPP lead to 42-28 heading into the locker room. 
 
SECOND HALF:  A Phoenix Shackelford fast-break lay-up gave the Broncos a 55-34 lead just five minutes into the second half.  The guests increased their lead to 62-36 on a lay-up by Jaden Winfield mid-way through the half.  A Jaden Edwards' lay-up cut HSU's deficit to 70-52 with six minutes left in regulation, but the closest the hosts would get as CPP took the 87-67 victory.
 
19 IN THE SECOND HALF:  Jaden Edwards finished the night with a team high 22 points with 19 coming in the second half.  Edwards went seven-for-14 from the field including making four of his five attempts from beyond the arc.  He also was four-for-five from the line while grabbing nine rebounds, recording two steals, blocking two shots and dishing out an assist.
 
23-18: Humboldt State (8-6, 2-6 CCAA) outscored the Broncos 23-18 in its play from the bench.  AJ Sims had 13 points followed by Keshawn Hall with six points and Austin Harris with four points. 
 
17 ON 25: The 'Jacks had 17 assists on 25 made field goals.  Thomas Melonja had four assists while AJ Sims and Amari Green each had three.  Bryce Mitchell and Keshawn Hall each had two assists while Jaden Edwards, Austin Harris and Thomas Nelson each had one. 
 
UP NEXT:  The 'Jacks will be on the road for their next two games. This Thursday, January 20, HSU will be in Hayward, Calif., for a 7:30pm tip-off with Cal State East Bay.  HSU will travel to Carson, Calif., for a 3pm tip-off with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, January 22.
