Men’s Basketball to Face Pioneers and Toros on the Road This Week

ARCATA, Calif---  The Humboldt State Lumberjacks will return to the court this week for a pair of CCAA road contests with Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The 'Jacks will be in Hayward, Calif., this Thursday, January 20 for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State East Bay.  They will end their two-game road this Saturday, January 22 in Carson, Calif., for a 3pm scheduled contest with Cal State Dominguez Hills. 
 
COACHING STAFF:  The 'Jacks are coached by second-year head coach Tae Norwood.  Coach Norwood has a .660 winning percentage during his three years as a head coach. Norwood led the 'Jacks to a 4-5 record during the pandemic season.  He came to Humboldt State from Florida, where he guided Keiser University to a 23-7 record during the 2019-20 season including a share of the conference regular season title.  Keiser also appeared in the NAIA Tournament. 
 
On his staff are Andy Harre (first year), HSU Alum and former men's basketball player Colin Caslick (third season) along with volunteers Jason Hodges and Baron Parks. 

RECAP OF THE LUMBERJACKS' LAST GAMES:  Humboldt State went 0-2 in its two home games last weekend. HSU started the weekend with an 83-62 loss to No. 6 Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday. Bryce Mitchell paced the 'Jacks with 14 points while AJ Sims chipped in 10 points off the bench for HSU.  On Saturday, the 'Jacks lost 87-67 to Cal Poly Pomona.  Jaden Edwards paced HSU with his 22 points and nine rebounds.  Sims added 13 points off the bench while Cam Timmons scored 10 points. 
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt State is 8-6 overall and 2-6 in the CCAA.  The 'Jacks are averaging 71.2 points per game while giving up 71.6 points game.  They are out-rebounding their opponents 37.0 to 33.7. Jaden Edwards leads the way with his 16.9 scoring average, 9.5 rebounding average and 18 steals.  Cam Timmons has blocked a team leading 12 shots and shooting a team high 54.7% from the field.  Amari Green leads the team with his 38 assists and 80.8% shooting from the line.  Thomas Melonja and AJ Sims each have made a team high 20 three-point field goals and connected on a team high 35% of their attempts from beyond the arc.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: In his first season as a 'Jack, Jaden Edwards has recorded six double-doubles this season. Edwards' first two came in HSU's first two games versus Western Washington (16 points/14 rebounds) and Simon Fraser (15 points/10 rebounds).  On Dec. 2 and Dec. 4, Edwards had an 11 points/11 rebound performance against SF State and a 19 points/12 rebounds effort against CSU Monterey Bay. Edwards' fourth double-double came on December 9 against Simpson in which he scored 41 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  He then scored 13 points and grabbed 17 rebounds at Stanislaus State (Dec. 11).  Cam Timmons recorded his first double-double on January 2 with an 18-point, 10-rebound performance against Sonoma State. 
 
CCAA RANKINGS: Humboldt State is fourth in the CCAA in rebounding margin while the 'Jacks are sixth in scoring, scoring margin, field goal percentage and free throw percentage.  Jaden Edwards is second in rebounding, fourth in scoring and sixth in field goal percentage.  Cam Timmons is third in blocked shots while Bryce Mitchell is sixth. 
 
6-0 NON-CONFERENCE (4-0 AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE NCAA DII WEST REGION FOES):  Four of HSU's six non-conference games were all NCAA Division II West Region games.  HSU started the season with two important wins over Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents in Western Washington (70-69) and Simon Fraser (63-59) in Carson, California.  The 'Jacks also defeated Western Oregon, 75-67, from the GNAC and Dominican, 74-68, from the PacWest Conference.  HSU's other non-conference victories were an 81-78 over Lincoln and an 85-68 win over Simpson.  The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.
 
CAL STATE EAST BAY: Coming into this weekend, the Pioneers are 3-10 overall and 1-6 in the CCAA.  Playing in their first game since New Year's Day, the Pioneers lost 76-64 at SF State this past Saturday.  They are averaging 72.9 points per game while giving up 78.0 points game.  Cal State East Bay is being out-rebounded 37.6 to 35.0.  Zafir Williams leads the team with his 15.2 scoring and 6.2 rebounding average along with his 89.2% shooting from the line.  Jesse Galloway has dished out a team leading 51 assists while DJ Sanders is shooting a team high 54.9% from the field.  Kaito Williams leads East Bay with his 22 three's made while Justin Vigil is shooting a team high 41.2% from beyond the arc.  Tim Andreolli has recorded a team high 17 steals.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. CSUEB):  Humboldt State leads the all-time series with the Pioneers 13-6.  Cal State East Bay has won the last three games including both in 2019-20 (85-72 on January 23 in Arcata and 81-75 on December 14 in Hayward).  The last HSU win was 82-75 on February 1, 2018 in Arcata.    
 
CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS;  Heading into their game this Thursday at home against Sonoma State, the Toros are 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA.  They lost their last game on January 13, 81-71 at San Francisco State.  This was their first game since January 1.  The Toros are averaging 70.5 points per game while giving up 71.8 points per game. They are averaging 37.2 rebounds per game as are their opponents.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Chris Seeley (15.0 ppg), Colten Kresl (14.5 ppg) and Andre Ball (10.5 ppg).  Seeley leads the team with his 45.1% shooting from the field, seven blocked shots and 6.9 rebounding average.  Kresl has made a team high 30 three's while Ball has connected on a team high 41% of his attempts from beyond the arc.  Jordan Hilstock leads CSUDH with his 19 steals while Kresl has dished out a team high 38 assists and made a team high 81.3% of his attempts from the free throw line.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. CSUDH):  Humboldt State leads the all-time series with the Toros 18-11. The two teams have split the last four meetings.  HSU Won the last won 98-93 in overtime in Carson on January 16, 2020.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA:  Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena.  The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships.  March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5.  The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
