Cal Poly Humboldt Travels to CSUMB and SF State for its Next Two Games

Alonzo Washington and His 'Jack Teammates will be at CSUMB and SF State This Weekend
ARCATA, Calif---  Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball team will be back on the road after a two-game home stand for a two-game road trip this weekend.  The 'Jacks will travel to Seaside, California, this Thursday, February 3 for 7:30pm scheduled contest with Cal State Monterey Bay. This Saturday, February 5, the 'Jacks will be in San Francisco for a 3pm scheduled game with San Francisco State. 
 
COACHING STAFF:  The 'Jacks are coached by second-year head coach Tae Norwood.  Coach Norwood has a .649 winning percentage during his three years as a head coach. Norwood led the 'Jacks to a 4-5 record during the pandemic season.  He came to Humboldt State from Florida, where he guided Keiser University to a 23-7 record during the 2019-20 season including a share of the conference regular season title.  Keiser also appeared in the NAIA Tournament. 
 
On his staff are Andy Harre (first year), HSU Alum and former men's basketball player Colin Caslick (third season) along with volunteers Jason Hodges and Baron Parks. 

RECAP OF THE LUMBERJACKS' LAST GAMES:  Humboldt went 0-2 in its two-game home stand this weekend.  The 'Jacks lost 66-58 to No. 13 Chico State on Thursday evening despite Jaden Edwards' ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Thomas Nelson added 11 points off the bench for the 'Jacks.  Humboldt lost 64-40 to Stanislaus State on Saturday despite Austin Harris and Jaden Edwards combing for 20 points and 12 rebounds. 
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt enters this weekend with a 10-6 overall record and a 4-6 CCAA mark.  The 'Jacks are averaging 70.6 points per game while giving up 69.6 points per game. They are out-rebounding their opponents 37.8 to 34.5.  Jaden Edwards leads the way with his 16.7 scoring and 9.8 rebounding averages.  Edwards also leads the team with his 38% shooting from three-point land and 20 steals.  Cam Timmons is shooting a team best 53.6% from the field and has blocked a team high 13 shots.  AJ Sims has connected on a team high 23 three-point field goals.  Amari Green has dished out a team leading 45 assists and shooting a team best 79.4% from the line. 
 
STILL ALIVE FOR THE CCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS:  Heading into the final eight games of the regular season, Cal Poly Humboldt is still alive for the CCAA Basketball Championships March 3-5.  The championships will be hosted by Humboldt in Lumberjack Arena. The 'Jacks are just one game out of the sixth and final spot. Humboldt is in seventh place with its 4-8 CCAA record.  The top six teams heading into this week's games are 1.) Cal State San Bernardino (10-1), 2.) Cal State San Marcos (10-2); 3.) Chico State (9-2); 4.) Cal State Monterey Bay (8-3); 5.) Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-5); and 6.) San Francisco State (5-7).
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: In his first season as a 'Jack, Jaden Edwards has recorded nine double-doubles this season. Edwards' first two came in HSU's first two games versus Western Washington (16 points/14 rebounds) and Simon Fraser (15 points/10 rebounds).  On Dec. 2 and Dec. 4, Edwards had an 11 points/11 rebound performance against SF State and a 19 points/12 rebounds effort against CSU Monterey Bay. Edwards' fourth double-double came on December 9 against Simpson in which he scored 41 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  He then scored 13 points and grabbed 17 rebounds at Stanislaus State (Dec. 11). Edwards' last two double-doubles came on January 20 and 22 at Cal State East Bay (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (13 points, 12 rebounds).  Edwards recorded his ninth double-double on Thursday with an 11-point, 10-rebound performance against Chico State.  Cam Timmons recorded his first double-double on January 2 with an 18-point, 10-rebound performance against Sonoma State. 
 
CCAA/NCAA RANKINGS: In the latest CCAA team statistical rankings, the 'Jacks are in the top ten in six categories. They are fourth in three-point field goal percentage defense (31%) and blocked shots per game (2.6) while they are fifth in scoring defense (69.6).  Humboldt is also sixth in field goal percentage (42.1%), three-point field goal percentage defense (31%) and steals per game (7.2)
 
Two individuals in Jaden Edwards and Cam Timmons are in the top ten in four individual categories. Edwards is second in rebounding (9.8 rpg), third in scoring (16.1 ppg) and sixth in field goal percentage (46.2%). Timmons is fourth in blocked shots per game (0.9). 
 
Edwards is in the top 25 in the nation in three individual categories.  He is 11th with nine double-doubles, 18th with 167 total rebounds and 22nd with his 9.8 rebounding average. 
 
6-0 NON-CONFERENCE (4-0 AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE NCAA DII WEST REGION FOES):  Four of HSU's six non-conference games were all NCAA Division II West Region games.  HSU started the season with two important wins over Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents in Western Washington (70-69) and Simon Fraser (63-59) in Carson, California.  The 'Jacks also defeated Western Oregon, 75-67, from the GNAC and Dominican, 74-68, from the PacWest Conference.  HSU's other non-conference victories were an 81-78 over Lincoln and an 85-68 win over Simpson.  The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.
 
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY: The Otters are 9-5 overall and 8-3 in the CCAA entering their game this Thursday with Humboldt.  They are averaging 71.3 points per game while giving up 69.1 points per game.  CSUMB is out-rebounding its opponents 41.4 to 36.9.  Two players are averaging double figures in scoring for CSUMB in Jordan May (12.6 ppg) and Levi Frankland (12.2 ppg).  Andrew Ferguson leads the way for the Otters with his 7.7 rebounding average and 10 blocked shots.  Jailen Nelson is shooting a team high 47.9% from the field while dishing out a team leading 30 assists.  May leads the Otters with his 38 three-point field goals made, 35% shooting from beyond the arc and 85.7% shooting from the line.  Frankland has recorded a team leading 15 steals.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES (Humboldt vs. CSUMB):  Humboldt leads the all-time series with the Otters 21-7, but the Otters have won the last three meetings including the one in December, 77-74 (overtime).  The last Lumberjack win in Seaside was, 68-61, on January 19, 2019. 
 
LAST TIME:  Cal State Monterey Bay defeated the 'Jacks 77-74 in overtime on December 4 in Arcata. Levi Frankland led the Otters with 21 points while Andrew Ferguson and Jailen Nelson combined for 29 points and 20 rebounds.    Jaden Edwards paced the 'Jacks with 19 points and 12 rebounds with Amari Green chipping in 10 points. 
 
SAN FRANCISCO STATE:  Entering their home game on Thursday with Sonoma State, the Gators are averaging 71.1 points per game while giving up 71.1 points per game.  They are out-rebounding their opponents 38.4 to 36.5.  SF State is 8-11 overall and 5-7 in the CCAA.  Two players are averaging double digits in scoring in Toby Okwuokei (13.1 ppg) and Jalen Chandler (11.1 ppg).  Okwuokei leads the team with his 6.8 rebounding average while Chandler had made a team high 35.2% of his attempts from beyond the arc.  Sean Orr leads the team with his 40 assists and 80.6% free throw percentage. Jalen Flanagan has recorded a team high 25 steals. Eche Okeke has made a team best 48% of shots from the field and blocked a team leading 10 shots. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES (Humboldt vs. San Francisco State):  Humboldt leads the all-time series with the Gators 14-13, but SF State has won seven of the last eight meetings including 84-80 in overtime in Arcata in December.  The last Humboldt victory was an 80-74 win on December 12, 2019 in Arcata.  The last time the 'Jacks have won in San Francisco was on February 18, 2011, 78-65. This makes SF State winning streak at home at eight over the 'Jacks. 
 
LAST TIME:  Humboldt lost to the Gators 84-80 in overtime on December 2 in Arcata. Five players scored in double digits for the Gators paced by Eche Okeke's 14 points.  Sean Orr, Toby Okwuokei and Travis August each had 13 points while Jalen Chandler had 12 points.  Four players scored in double figures for Humboldt paced by Will Johnson's 20 points.  Jaden Edwards had 11 points and 11 rebounds and AJ Sims chipped in 16 points.  Thomas Melonja added 11 points for the 'Jacks.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA:  Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena.  The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships.  March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5.  The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
