Humboldt's Hot Start Cooled by Simon Fraser

BURNABY, B.C. -- Saturday night, the Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball team closed out the CCAA/GNAC Challenge against the tournament host, Simon Fraser University. After a hot start and 46-45 lead at halftime, the Lumberjacks saw Simon Fraser pull away in the second half, leading to a 97-79 Red Leaf victory. The senior guard, Jaden Edwards, led Humboldt with 17 points and nine rebounds.

GAME SUMMARY
It was all Cal Poly Humboldt to start the game as they grabbed the momentum early. The Lumberjacks jumped out to an 18-5 lead after creating two turnovers and getting baskets from six different players; Shemar O'Roy-Ford, Marlon Ruffin, Jaden Edwards, Ian Krishnan, Malek Davis, and Josh Berenbaum. At the 7:22 mark, Krishnan added to Humboldt's consistently held lead, making it 34-22 after three free throws. Simon Fraser responded with a 15-2 run of their own and took a 37-36 lead with 3:21 left to play in the first half. A couple of big three point shots by Rylan O'Brien and Josh Berenbaum gave the Jacks a 46-45 lead at the half.

Humboldt had the long ball working to start the second half with both Krishnan and Davis hitting threes and extending the lead to seven, 52-45. SFU exploded offensively and went on a 17-4 run over a four-minute period to erase its seven-point deficit and take a 62-56 lead. The Jacks cut the lead to three after an Edwards fast break layup with 10 minutes left in the game. The momentum shifted to the Red Leafs after a big 15-2 run that opened the SFU lead up to 18 points. Humboldt dropped their second game of the season to Simon Fraser with a final score of 97-79.
