Humboldt’s Defense Stymies Golden Eagles in 88-71 Victory for the ‘Jacks

ARCATA,  Calif.--- Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks outscored the visiting Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles 57-40 in the second half and held them to just 37% shooting in the second half to key their 88-71 victory on "Black Out Night" in Lumberjack Arena.  Jaden Edwards posted his 12th double-double with 31 points and 13 rebounds.  AJ Sims chipped in 17 points while Thomas Melonja had a season high 15 points.  Amari Green dished out a career high 13 assists with just three turnovers for the 'Jacks.
 
FIRST HALF:  The 'Jacks jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first five minutes capped by an AJ Sims' three off a pass from Amari Green.  Cal State Los Angeles (6-14, 3-11 CCAA) outscored the 'Jacks 20-9 in the next ten minutes to take a 20-17 lead.  An Austin Harris' lay-up off a pass from Jaden Edwards gave the 'Jacks back the lead, 23-20, with 4:13 left in the half.  The Golden Eagles came right back and took a 24-23 lead on two free throws by Shane Bell with 2:25 left in the first half.  Another tree by Sims off another assist from Green gave Humboldt a brief 31-29 lead, but a Shawn Estes' jumper in the paint tied the game at 31-31 heading into the half.
 
SECOND HALF:  The second half was evenly played until the 'Jacks outscored their guests 17-7 to take a 55-45 lead with 11 minutes left in the half on a Cam Timmons' jumper.  Cal Poly Humboldt (11-14, 5-14 CCAA) increased its lead to 63-49 on a Jaden Edwards' fast-break layup with 8:15 on the clock.  Cal State Los Angeles cut the 'Jack lead to 80-69 on two free throws by Alexander Sokol but it was a little too late as Humboldt finished the game on an 8-2 run capped by an Andrew Mork lay-up to take the 88-71 victory.
 
ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR EDWARDS: Jaden Edwards posted his 12th double-double this evening with 31 points and 13 rebounds.  He had three assists while he shot 13-for-20 from the field including going a perfect five-for-five from beyond the arc.
 
13 ASSISTS:  Amari Green had a career high 13 assists with just three turnovers to go with his two steals, eight rebounds and six points in 36 minutes.  As a team, the 'Jacks had 22 assists with Jaden Edwards dishing out three, Austin Harris and AJ Sims each with two and Thomas Melonja with one.
 
SEASON HIGH FOR MELONJA:  Thomas Melonja had a season high 15 points on his five-of-six shooting from three-point land in 22 minutes of action this evening for Humboldt.
 
15 TREYS: The trio of Thomas Melonja, AJ Sims and Jaden Edwards went a combined 15-for-20 from beyond the arc this evening for the 'Jacks.  Both Melonja and Edwards went a combined 10-for-10.
 
57-40: Cal Poly Humboldt outscored the Golden Eagles 57-40 in the second half.  The 'Jacks held Cal State Los Angeles to just 37% hooting from the field and 27% from beyond the arc in the second stanza.
 
SENIOR NIGHT:  The Lumberjacks will host nationally ranked Cal State San Marcos this Saturday, February 26 at 7:30pm in Senior Night.  Prior to the game, Humboldt will recognize its lone senior in Amari Green.
