ARCATA, Calif.--- The trio of Michael Castellino, Jesse Mendez and
Motoki Sato were presented awards at the 2021-22 Cal Poly Humboldt Outstanding Student Awards ceremony on April 27 in the Great Hall on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt. Castellino, who is a member of the Cal Poly Humboldt Men's Crew Club Team, was the recipient of the Excellence in Sports Club. Mendez, who is also a member of the men's crew team, was a recipient of the Outstanding Student Researchers. Sato, who is a member of the Humboldt men's soccer team, was the Excellence in Intercollegiate Athletics recipient.
Castellino has been a member of the Humboldt Men's Crew Team since Spring of 2021. He is pursuing a degree in Environmental Resources Engineering at Cal Poly Humboldt. Throughout this year, his first year on the water, Michael has helped his boats podium in multiple events including: 2nd in N4+, and 2x, 1st in N4+, V2x.
Mendez, who is a Physics Major, was one of ten recipients of the Outstanding Student Researchers. The Physics major did his research in Measuring the Magnetic Moment of a Torsion Pendulum.
Sato has been a member of the Jack men's soccer team for the past four seasons. This season, he was named to the All-CCAA Men's Soccer Team for the first time in his career. He is the first recipient of Coach Kelly Award to the Lumberjack men's soccer player that best exemplified principles that Coach Kelly emphasized: dedication to self-improvement, a commitment to collective effort and the value of striving for academic excellence. Sato was named the 2020-21 CCAA Men's Soccer Championship Scholar-Athlete. He has multiple times been named a CCAA All-Academic Team recipient, CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll recipient and D2ADA Academic Achievement Award.
