ARCATA, Calif. –For the first time since 2019, the Cal Poly Humboldt Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held their Annual Awards Banquet in The Great Hall on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt. After a special presentation from Dr. Dariel "DT" Henry, the SAAC presented eight awards including the
Evelyn Andrews Award, Male Athlete of the Year, and Female Athlete of the Year.
Dr. Dariel "DT" Henry is the Director of TRiO Student Support Services at Bristol Community College in Fall River, Massachusetts. Prior to Bristol, Dr. Henry was a Director of TRIO Student Support Services at Massasoit Community College where he provided academic support for freshmen football players. Dr. Henry was also an Academic Coach at Dean College where, in 2015, he implemented strategies that increased retention of football student-athletes by 50%. Dr. Henry spoke to the Lumberjack student-athletes about achieving success after careers as a student-athlete.
The Freshman of the Year went to track and field's
Delaena Montes. The Ridgecrest, Calif., native is currently sixth in the CCAA with her throw of 40-10.25 (12.45m) in the shot put which she recorded on April 9 at the Sacramento State Invite. Montes is 14
th in the conference in the discus with her throw of 106-8 (32.51m) which she recorded on March 31 at the Chabot Invite. Both of those throws are personal bests for Montes this season. She recorded five top-five finishes this season in the shot put for the Jacks.
The Newcomer of the Year went to women's basketball's
Madison Parry. The 2021-22 First Team All-CCAA selection averaged 15.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. She recorded 10 double-doubles this season while shooting 44% from the field. Parry also shot 74% from the free throw line while dishing out 39 assists and recording 28 steals. She finished second in the conference in rebounding, third in scoring, sixth in field goal percentage and seventh in free throw percentage.
Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer player
Motoki Sato was the recipient of the Academic Achievement Award. At the Cal Poly Humboldt Outstanding Student Awards ceremony, Sato was the recipient of the Excellence in Intercollegiate Athletics. This season, Sato was named to the 2021 All-CCAA Team for the first time in his career. He has been named multiple times to the CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll, CCAA All-Academic Team and D2ADA Achievement. He is finishing the semester with a 3.98 GPA.
Lumberjack volleyball player
Macy Thomas was named the Community Leader of the Year. Thomas has been the SAAC Co-President the past two years. During the pandemic, Thomas brought Make A Wish Workout for Wish program to Cal Poly Humboldt. The past two years, Thomas has helped raise money to make wishes come true for some special people through the Make A Wish program. Thomas was instrumental in raising money and having canned food goods donated to the Cal Poly Humboldt's Oh-SNAP program through the SAAC Canned Food Drive.
This year's Lumberjack Spirit Award went to the Humboldt men's soccer team, under the direction of head coach
Fred Jungemann. The award is based on school spirit and is awarded to the team and or individual that supports all Jack events throughout the academic year.
The
Evelyn Andrews Award went to
Izzy Starr from the Cal Poly Humboldt softball team. Andrews was a softball player for the 'Jacks who passed away in 2020. In recognition of Andrews, this award goes to the Lumberjack student-athlete that is a good teammate, supportive, school spirited and who shows up every day regardless of circumstances. Starr, the 2021 NFCA All-American, hit .395 this season in 51 games. She had 68 hits of which 15 were doubles and seven were home runs. Starr drove in 41 runs this season, scored 23 runs and was eight-for-eight in stolen base attempts.
Cal Poly Humboldt's Male Athlete of the Year went to
Marco Silveira from the men's soccer team. The 2021 All-CCAA First Team honoree led the Jacks with his seven goals and 10 assists this season. Silveira was named to the United Soccer Coaches First Team All-West Region team as well as the D2SIDA All-West Region Second Team. The two-time CCAA Player of the Week recipient finished second on the Humboldt's all-time assists top ten list with 24. He is also tied for 11
th on the career goals list with 15.
Jack track and field athlete
Joy Hano was the recipient of the Female Athlete of the Year. Heading into this weekend's CCAA Track & Field Championships, Hano is second in the CCAA in the 100-hurdles (14.50), eighth in the long jump (17-6.25, 5.34m), ninth in the 100-meters (12.33) and 13
th in the 200 (26.68). Earlier this season, she was named the CCAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week. Hano is on the Cal Poly Humboldt Top Ten List in the 100-hurdles (third), 100-meters (fifth) and 200-meters (tenth).
