Cal Poly Humboldt Men’s Soccer to Host Nighthawks and Hawks This Week in Home Openers

ARCATA, Calif.---- Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer team will begin the 2022 season with a pair of home NCAA Division II West Region match-ups.  Humboldt will host Northwest Nazarene this Thursday, August 25 in its regular season home opener at 3pm.  Two days later, the Jacks will host Holy Names at 11:30am.  Both matches will take place at Cal Poly Humboldt's College Creek Field.
 
RECAP OF 2021 SEASON:  The Lumberjacks, under the direction of head coach Fred Jungemann, had returns nine starters from last year's team that finished 10-5-2.  The ten wins were the most by a Jack men's soccer team since 2006 when Humboldt finished 11-6-3. Humboldt returns goalkeeper, Adrian Gallardo, who posted a 0.85 goals against average which broke the school's single season record.  Gallardo posted a 0.829 saves percentage with 68 saves and seven shutouts.  For his performance, Gallardo earned All-CCAA Second Team honors along with All-Region honors.
 
Also, back for the Jacks is Dylan Tovani who just like Gallardo earned All-CCAA Second Team and All-Region honors.  Tovani scored three goals last season with two assists. He had two game-winning goals for the Jacks.  Also earning All-CCAA honors in 2021 and back for Humboldt are Christian Gonzalez, Devin Hauenstein and Motoki Sato
 
EIGHT SHUTOUTS:  The Jacks posted eight shutouts in 2021 including seven straight to begin the season.  Adrian Gallardo recorded seven shutouts in goal for Humboldt while Jacob Cotton posted one shutout.  As a team, the Jacks allowed 0.80 goals a match with a 0.829 saves percentage. 
 
RETURNING GOAL SCORERS:  Cal Poly Humboldt returns six players that scored at least one goal last year in Alex Lopez (four), Daniel Adeyeye (three), Dylan Tovani (three), Devin Hauenstein (two), Edgar Castaneda (two) and Ramiro Rosas (two). Lopez and Tovani each had two game-winning goals with Rosas recording one game-winner.  The Jacks have five returners that recorded at least two assists last season in Nico Herrera Land (four), Daniel Adeyeye (three), Dylan Tovani (two), Devin Hauenstein (two) and Adrian Gallardo (two).
 
ACADEMIC HONORS:  The Lumberjacks earned honors for their performance in the classroom during the 2021-22 Academic Year.  Dylan Tovani was Humboldt's CCAA Dr. Hal E. Charnofsky Award recipient.  Tovani and his teammates were recipients of the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award.  Eight Jacks were named to the CCAA Fall Academic Team in December in Tovani, Jordon Bruton, Jacob Cotton, Cole Falco, Devin Hauenstein, Gou Nitta, Motoki Sato, Dylan Tovani and Sean Tucker.
 
Bruton, Cotton, Hauenstein, Nitta, Sato, Tovani and Tucker along with Sam Daitch, Christian Gonzalez, Oliver Horgan and Milan Uncanin were selected to the 2021-22 CCAA All-Academic Team.
 
NORTHWEST NAZARENE:  The Nighthawks finished the 2021 season 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the GNAC.  They scored 23 goals in 16 matches while they gave up 23 goals.  Lukas Juodkunaitis returns for NNU after being named the 2021 GNAC Freshman of the Year and earning Second Team All-GNAC honors.  He scored five goals last season two-game winners-.  Also, back for the Nighthawks is All-Region honoree and All-GNAC selection Lorenzo Valentini.  Sawyer Price returns for NNU in goals with his 1.52 goals against average, 55 saves and four shutouts.
 
ALL-TIME:  The Jacks won the only meeting between the two teams last season in Salt Lake City on September 4, 4-0.  Alex Lopez had a goal and an assist while Dylan Tovani scored the Jacks as did Nico Herrera LandGou Nitta assisted on one of the Humboldt's goals and Adrian Gallardo had four saves in the shutout for the Jacks.
 
HOLY NAMES:  The Hawks went 5-10-1 last season including 3-7 in the PacWest Conference.  Return for the Hawks Is Rasmus Nielson and Mark Redfield in goals.  The duo posted a 1.66 goals against average with two shutouts and a 0.625 saves percentage.  Joel Rosales is their leading returning scorer with his five goals of which two were game-winning goals. 
 
ALL-TIME:  Humboldt leads the all-time series with Holy Names 5-1 including winning 3-0 on September 12 in Hayward.  Alex Lopez scored the Jacks' first goal of the match while Daniel Adeyeye and Adrian Gallardo each had assists.  Gallardo had two saves en route to the shutout.

HAWAI'I BOUND:  After Saturday's match with Holy Names, the Jacks' next two matches will be in Hawai'i against Hawai'i Pacific and Hawai'i Hilo.  Humboldt will be in Honolulu on September 1 to face the Sharks of Hawai'i Pacific at 7pm (HT).  The Jacks will finish off their two-game road trip in Hawai'I with a 11am (HT) match on September 4 at Hawai'i Hilo.  They will return home on September 7 for a 3pm match with Simpson University.
