Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks dominated the visiting William Jessup Warriors 2-0 in the Jacks' 2022 home opener. Emma McChristie scored Humboldt's first goal in the sixth minute with Frida Duran Arellano recording the assist. In the 61st minute, the Jacks sealed the win on a goal by Duran Arellano off a ball from Grace Johnson and McChristie. Humboldt's Carson Thomson-Terrel recorded two saves en route to her second consecutive shutout.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "I was very pleased with our performance today," said head coach Grant Landy. "The team played hard and really wanted to win. It's nice to get our first victory of the season, the team has been building toward this since last weekend. We got good contributions from a lot of different players."
FIRST HALF: Just five minutes into the match, Cal Poly Humboldt (1-1-1) took the 1-0 lead as Emma McChristie scored her first goal of the season off a ball from Frida Duran Arellano. The Jacks had a chance to double their lead, but Emilie Wallin's shot attempt sailed wide right in the 22nd minute. They had another chance in the 35th minute when Alexis Blue's shot went wide left of the goal. With just eight minutes left in the half, Julia Humphreys saw her chance to double Humboldt's lead be stopped by the Warriors' Madelin Jern. William Jessup (1-2) had a chance to tie the match late in the half, but Carson Thomson-Terrel recorded one of her two saves on the afternoon.
SECOND HALF: It looked like the Jacks were going to finally double their lead just 51 seconds into the new stanza when Wallin's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Warrior keeper. Five minutes later, Jysabella Tolentino's chance to double the Jacks' lead went wide left. Humboldt finally doubled its lead in the 61st minute when Duran Arellano connected on a ball from Grace Johnson and McChristie. WJU had a chance to cut into the Jack lead, but Thomson-Terrel snagged Aaliyah Grigsby's shot on goal attempt as Humboldt held on for its second consecutive shutout.
DOMINATION: Humboldt held a 19-5 advantage in shot attempts including 12-3 in the second half. The Jacks had eight shots on goal attempts to the Warriors' two. They also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
DURAN ARELLANO/McCHRISTIE: Frida Duran Arellano and Emma McChristie were a part of both of the Jackss' two goals. Duran Arellano assisted on Humboldt's first goal in the sixth minute. Then with thirty minutes, she scored on a ball from Grace Johnson. McChristie scored the Jacks' first goal and had the second assist on Duran Arellano's goal.
SECOND STRAIGHT: Carson Thomson-Terrel posted her second straight shutout in goal for Humboldt. This afternoon, she had two saves en route to the shutout. The red-shirt freshman has posted a 0.33 goals against average with four saves in Humboldt's 1-1-1 start to the season.
UP NEXT: Cal Poly Humboldt will finish off its weekend on Saturday, September 3 at noon when the Jacks face Holy Names. The Hawks defeated Simpson earlier today 2-0 at College Creek Field.
