'Jacks Advance to CCAA Semifinal After Second-Overtime Victory at Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Number five seed Cal Poly Humboldt took on the number four seed Stanislaus State Warriors in the first round of the CCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon from Warrior Stadium in Turlock. Earlier in the season, the two teams played to a 0-0 tie on October 12th. Unlike the scoreless tie back in October, Sunday's Quarterfinal matchup went to a second overtime that saw Cal Poly Humboldt extend their season after defeating the Warriors with a final score of 2-1 to advance to the CCAA Semifinal. Erin Mohr scored the equalizer off a penalty kick in the 81st minute and Frida Duran converted the game winner in the second-overtime off a Kylea Becker corner kick and assist from Emilia Long

The win was one for the history books on many levels. Not only was this the first CCAA Tournament victory in program history, it was also their 13th win of the season which marks the most wins in a single season in Humboldt Women's Soccer history.

Head Coach Grant Landy said after the match, "We showed a lot of maturity and resilience today. It's something we have been building toward the last month of the season. To fight back down 1-0 with 10 minutes left and find a way to win says a lot about the mentality of this team. Stanislaus is a well coached team and very difficult to play against. We are excited to be moving on to the final site of the conference championship."

Stan State was first on the attack as Jocelyn Lopez tried to squeeze a shot by Carson Thomson-Terrel in the bottom left corner, but Thomson-Terrel picked up her lone first half save at the 4:12 mark. Humboldt's 10 shots in the first half kept the Warrior goalkeeper busy, as she collected nine saves in the first 45 minutes of action. The 'Jacks were not short of opportunities, however went into halftime tied with Stan State tied at 0-0.

The second half saw Cal Poly Humboldt battle with the woodwork, as Grace Johnson had a great look to put the 'Jacks ahead but her shot defected off the crossbar in the 61st minute. Shortly after, another good opportunity from Frida Duran Arellano was sent out top over the goal. Despite a surplus of shots from Humboldt, Stan State struck the scoreboard first when Aliah Avila converted on an assist from Marivic Lek-Miro in the 78th minute.

Just three minutes later, Maya Davis shot a ball that was deflected off the top of the crossbar once again. As the teams fought to recover possession of the ball, Rhea Chan was fouled by Warrior goalkeeper Malia Allen in the box which resulted in a yellow card for Stan State and penalty kick opportunity for Humboldt. Erin Mohr took the penalty kick and successfully converted the equalizer, burying the ball past the keeper to even the score at 1-1.

The teams were not able to score in regulation, which sent the match into two ten-minute overtime periods. The first ten minute overtime period witnessed Stan State take five shots and Humboldt take one, with none being on target. Two minutes into the second overtime period, Humboldt was awarded a corner kick. Kylea Becker sent a perfect ball to the middle of the scuffle that was deflected off of Emilia Long's head. Before the ball hit the ground, Frida Duran Arellano came up and lasered a ball through the pile of players past the goalie to give Humboldt a 2-1 advantage. This goal ended up being the game-winner for the Lumberjacks and Frida Duran Arellano's fourth on the season. Four game-winners is tied for the most in the CCAA.

Humboldt will advance to the semi-final round of the CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament and face number one seed Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, November 10 at 7:00 PM from Cardinale Stadium in Seaside, Calif.
