SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks had a long weekend of action at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic and Stanford Invitational, with multiple personal bests and highlight performances.
Action began on Thursday at Cox Stadium in San Francisco, where Rosa Granados finished only a second off her personal best in the women's 10,000m run. Her time of 36:28.97 was good enough for sixth place overall and was only a tenth of a second off the national provisional time. In the men's 10,000m run, freshman Luis Sandoval led the way in his debut with a time of 31:58, which was good enough for 10th place in his heat and 30th overall.
Jaxon Leduc finished three seconds behind his personal best in the 3000m steeplechase, placing eighth in his heat with a time of 9:32.42.
Meanwhile, across the bay at the Stanford Invite on Friday, Joy Hano competed in a competitive 100m hurdles field where she finished 18th in the preliminary heats with a time of 14.33 seconds. Grant Van Emmerik also made his debut at his primary event in the 400m, finishing 28th in a stacked field with a time of 49.5 seconds. In the Javelin, Terrence Allen finished ninth (44.10m / 144' 8") while in the women's shot put, Nizhoni Kears PR'd by nine inches (10.8m / 35' 5.25").
Back at Fanelli, Amelia Jackson (4:54) Mariska Kessler (4:57) and Emilie Cates (5:18) all earned PR's in the women's 1500m run. In the men's 5,000m run, freshman James Woolery cracked the 15 minute barrier with a 14:55 to finish eighth in his heat. Friday action ended with Cal Poly Humboldt's men's 4x400m relay team (Joseph Rosenquist, Slade Cavallero, Zach Blood, Isaac Arthur) finishing third with a time of 3:24.63.
On the third and final day of competition, Hano returned to San Francisco where she placed third in the long jump (5.27m / 17' 3.5") and fifth in the 100m hurdles (14.17s). Her hurdle time on Saturday was only sixth hundredths of a second behind her career best set last weekend.
In the rarely run distance medley relay, Cal Poly Humboldt's women finished third in a time of 12:19.38, while the men's "A" squad finished second behind UC Riverside with a time of 10:06.39. The men's "C" squad finished in sixth with a time of 10:28.18 while the men's "B" team finished eighth in 10:38.99.
In the men's 110m hurdles, Walker Dorris finished third in his heat with a PR time of 16.44s, while in the women's 100m dash, Cocome McKamey improved her personal best with a time of 13.19s. In the men's 400m hurdles, Slade Cavallero finished only three tenths of a second behind his season best to place ninth (54.71).
