Weese's Lone Goal Elevates Humboldt to Victory Over Central Washington

Seattle, Wash. -- The women's soccer team of Cal Poly Humboldt kicked off their 2023 season from Seattle, Washington on Thursday afternoon when they took on Central Washington at Interbay Stadium. The Lumberjacks continued their winning ways with a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats thanks to a Brooke Weese goal in the 34th minute off an Annie Hoffman assist. Carson Thomson-Terrel also posted her first clean sheet of the year in goal for Humboldt.

"It was a slow start but I thought we grew into the game nicely," said head coach Grant Landy. "We made some slight adjustments at halftime and the second half was more of what we are capable of. It would have been nice to get a second goal and we created enough chances but their goalkeeper made some good saves."

Despite a slower start for Humboldt, the 'Jacks still out shot the Wildcats eight to five in the first half and maintained more possession than Central Washington. A spark was ignited on the offensive end after Landy made a wave of subs near the 25 and 28 minute marks. Junior Brook Weese found the back of net off of an Annie Hoffman assist in the 34th minute to give Humboldt a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

"A lot of credit goes to the group that came on in the first half to help change the game," added Landy. "We continue to talk about embracing your role and making a difference so I am very proud of that group today."

The second half was a scoreless one that saw many shot attempts from the Lumberjacks. The defense held the back line as they only allowed four total shots for the entire game with one being on target. Humboldt will face a tough opponent this Saturday in Seattle Pacific, in hopes to open the season up with two wins on the road.

Landy closed out his thoughts with, "It was very important for us to get a good result today as we will be tested on Saturday against Seattle Pacific, who is always one of the top teams in the region. It will be a great barometer for us moving forward."
