SEATLLE, Wash. -- A thrilling match between Cal Poly Humboldt and Seattle Pacific on Saturday saw the Lumberjacks comeback in the second half to beat the Falcons for the first time in program history, ending with a final score of 4-3.
Emilia Long had a haul of goals, scoring all four, including the game winner with two seconds left. She became the first Lumberjack in program history to ever score four goals in a single match.
"I am just so proud of this team," said head coach
Grant Landy. "We have been preaching to them to compete for 90 minutes and today was a perfect example of playing right until the end. Our team stuck to the game plan and never gave up. Scoring three unanswered goals against a team like Seattle Pacific should be a good confidence builder. They are a fantastic team."
Match Summary
The Falcons of Seattle Pacific jumped out to an early lead, as Jacqueline Blakely scored in the second minute of the match to grab a 1-0 lead. In the 19
th minute,
Emilia Long responded with a goal to even the match at one goal a piece on an assist from
Emma McChristie. SPU didn't let Humboldt keep their momentum long though, as Lauren Forster found the back of the net for the Falcons and recaptured a 2-1 lead in the 23
rd minute. To close out the first half, the Falcons added yet another goal in the 39
th minute and went up 3-1. Although the Falcons went up 3-1 in the first half, Humboldt had more shots (11-7) and more shots on goal (5-4) than SPU.
The second half began with the 'Jacks grabbing the momentum early when
Emilia Long picked up her second goal on an assist from
Frida Duran Arellano in the 50
th minute. The scoring of Long continued in the 77
th minute when she picked up a hat trick and scored the equalizer to make it 3-3 with 12 minutes to go.
The final fifteen seconds rewrote the history books for the program when the Lumberjacks obtained possession and sent the ball up field to
Emilia Long. Long was one-on-one with the goalie as she got passed her defender and found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the match with just two seconds left on the clock. The fourth goal set a new program record for most goals in a single match, which led to the program's first victory over Seattle Pacific as well.
Landy commented, "We were waiting for a performance like this from Emilia. She had a an amazing performance."
