EUREKA, Calif. — The Cal Poly Humboldt rowing program closed out an impressive fall season, laying a strong foundation for what promises to be a competitive spring. Under new standards set this fall, the team demonstrated significant progress in both fitness and performance while continuing to foster a culture of hard work and camaraderie.
The Lumberjacks kicked off the season with a scrimmage against Saint Mary's College in October, participating in five races that emphasized consistency and aggression. This early-season test helped the team build confidence as they focused on maintaining speed and racing with purpose.
On November 9, Humboldt faced Sacramento State in five head-to-head races, showcasing one of the best fall performances in recent memory. The Lumberjacks were particularly strong in the V8 and novice boats as they earned victories. Their ability to execute fast starts and sustain speed throughout the races underscored their composure and consistency on the water.
"This fall has been one of the best we've had since I've been here," said Head Coach Matt Weise. "The team raced with confidence and aggression, and their hard work is clearly paying off. It's exciting to see how well they're coming together."
Key contributors this fall included senior coxswains Sonja Scollon and Emily Daniels, whose leadership and command on the water were instrumental in the team's success. Dana Foley, Kealey Scott, and Emily Marsolais also stood out with their preparation and leadership, setting the tone for their teammates both vocally and through their actions.
"This is a group that not only looks great on the water but also excels off the water as a cohesive and driven team," added Weise.
As the team transitions to six weeks of individual training that ends January 17, the coaching staff is confident that the athletes will return in top rowing fitness, ready to compete at a high level in the spring.
"Our seniors and leaders have done a phenomenal job building this team and setting a high standard," said Weise. "We're looking forward to seeing the hard work translate into results this spring."
