ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt rowing team will travel to Gold River, Calif. this weekend to compete at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships, held Saturday, Apr. 25 and Sunday, Apr. 26 at Lake Natoma. The regatta will begin with heats on Saturday morning at 8 a.m., followed by championship finals on Sunday.
The Lumberjacks enter one of the premier West Coast championship regattas looking to build momentum against a deep field of Division I, II, and club programs, with opportunities to qualify boats into Grand Finals and contend for podium finishes.
Humboldt continues to carry national expectations into the postseason stretch after a historic 2025 campaign that included a GNAC Championship and a national runner-up finish, along with a No. 2 national preseason ranking in NCAA Division II.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal Poly Humboldt is coming off a strong showing at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Championships, highlighted by a victory in the Varsity 8+ (7:08.03), showcasing the team's speed and depth across multiple boats.
The Lumberjacks also saw competitive finishes throughout their lineup, continuing to establish themselves as one of the top Division II programs in the country as they approach championship racing. This included second place finishes by the Novice 4+ group (8:36.45) and JV 8+ (7:36.64).
WIRA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The WIRA Championships serve as a key postseason benchmark, featuring a two-day format with Saturday heats determining placement into Sunday's finals. Crews must place near the top of their heats to advance into Grand Finals, where overall champions are decided.
Humboldt will look to translate its recent success into strong qualifying performances on Saturday, aiming to place multiple boats into Grand Finals across the Varsity 8, Varsity 4, and additional entries.
With a combination of experienced returners and developing depth, the Lumberjacks will rely on their consistency and race execution as they compete against some of the top programs on the West Coast.
