Cal Poly Humboldt Rowing Shines: Varsity 4 Boat Secures National Runner-Up Title, Team Takes Fourth Place at Nationals

Varsity 4 crew accept their national runner-up trophies at the 2024 NCAA DII Rowing Championships awards ceremony
BETHEL, Ohio -- Cal Poly Humboldt women's rowing placed fourth nationally with a total of 19 team points on Saturday morning at the NCAA Division II Rowing National Championships in Ohio. The Varsity 4+ (V4+) boat finished as national runner-ups, placing second in the Grand Final with a time of 7:50.41. The boat was led by coxswain Emily Daniels and featured rowers Gabriella Griffin, Marie-Claire Desplancke, Emry Yount, and Sydney Schwankl

"Of course, you want your team to row as fast as they can on the last day, and this team did everything they could," stated head coach Matt Weise. "The four had an outstanding performance and held their seed, which was great to see. The eight was right there in the mix, and if they were just two seconds faster, we would be national champions. It's a hard one to swallow, but they raced great and raced their hearts out; that's all you can ask for as a coach. We will look to next season and try to figure out how to go a little bit faster. I'm very proud of this group."

The V4+ boat kicked the day off with a strong second place finish in their Grand Final race. The 'Jacks crossed the line with a time of 7:50.41 to earn a spot on the podium for the second straight season. Seattle Pacific University won the race with a time of 7:46.39. Following the top-two finishers was Central Oklahoma (7:57.46) in third place and Mercyhurst (8:07.71) in fourth place.
