Humboldt Earns Shutout Victory over Dominican to Tally First Win of Season

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt (1-2-0) secured their first win of the season with a solid 2-0 victory over Dominican (2-1-0) at Kennelly Field on Thursday afternoon. The Lumberjacks' strong defensive performance, coupled with timely goals from Megan Janikowski and Mari Ige, led to a decisive shutout on the road.

"Last weekend was hard for the team, but today we showed a fight that was really impressive," said head coach Grant Landy. "We have lots to work on, but our team mentality was so much better. We will try and keep this momentum going for Saturday."

The Lumberjacks opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Megan Janikowski found the back of the net with her first goal of the season, assisted by Alexis Blue. Blue delivered a precise pass that Janikowski converted on a header to give Humboldt a 1-0 lead.

Just after the break, Humboldt doubled their advantage. Mari Ige scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Dominican. This goal marked Ige's first of the season and provided the Lumberjacks with a comfortable 2-0 cushion.

Humboldt's defense held firm throughout the match, with goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel making three crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet. Dominican attempted to rally with eight shots, three on target, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Dominican's Miranda Gregory received a caution in the 53rd minute, while Humboldt's Ava Kruckenberg was shown a yellow card in the 74th minute.

Overall, Humboldt outshot Dominican 9-8, with four of those shots on goal. The Lumberjacks also earned four corner kicks to Dominican's nine but were more efficient in converting their chances.

Looking Ahead

Cal Poly Humboldt will look to carry this momentum into their next match as they continue their Bay Area road trip. The Lumberjacks will face Academy of Art in a non-conference game on September 14 at the San Francisco Glens Stadium (Treasure Island Field). Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
