IRVINE, Calif. – In a tightly contested matchup at Golden Eagle's Field, the Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to undefeated Concordia University Irvine on Saturday evening. Despite a strong second-half showing, the Lumberjacks were unable to find the equalizer, moving their record to 3-3-0 for the season.
"I'm not really into moral victories but we showed what we are capable of in the second half tonight when we all fight together and commit to the tactical plan," stated head coach
Grant Landy. "Despite the loss, I am hoping this might be the turning point in our season."
The Golden Eagles (4-0-0) took the lead early, with Hailey Havican scoring her fourth goal of the season just 5:26 into the match. Havican's goal, which ties her for the most goals in the PacWest Conference this season, came from a defensive miscue by the Lumberjacks, allowing her to find the back of the net and give Concordia the early advantage.
Cal Poly Humboldt pressed forward as the match progressed, outshooting Concordia 9-3 in the second half and finishing with a 12-8 advantage in shots overall, including six on target. Despite the offensive pressure, the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper stood firm, recording six saves to keep the Lumberjacks off the scoreboard.
The Lumberjacks earned four corner kicks but were unable to convert any into goals. Defensively, Humboldt limited Concordia's opportunities after the early goal, with goalkeeper
Carson Thomson-Terrel needing to make just one save in the contest.
Two yellow cards were issued to Concordia players, with Maddie Lauro receiving the first at the 25:17 mark and Havican being cautioned in the 70th minute. Both teams played with intensity throughout, matching each other with 10 fouls apiece.
The Lumberjacks will look to bounce back and finish the non-conference portion of their schedule on a winning note next Saturday at Sonoma State.
