ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt (3-3-1, 0-0-0 CCAA) fought to a 1-1 draw against Sonoma State (2-2-3, 0-0-0 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field. Both teams found the net in the first half, but solid defense in the second half left the game in a stalemate.
The 'Jacks opened the scoring early, with
Heidie Munoz netting her first goal of the season at the 7:35 mark. The goal came courtesy of a well-placed assist from
Casey Martinez, giving Cal Poly Humboldt an early 1-0 advantage. Munoz made the most of her opportunity, slotting the ball past Sonoma State's goalkeeper to give the 'Jacks momentum.
Sonoma State responded just before halftime. In the 44th minute, the Seawolves were awarded a penalty kick, which Julia Betti converted to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams continued to battle, but neither could break through in the second half, resulting in a hard-fought draw.
The second half saw increased intensity, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to capitalize. Cal Poly Humboldt's defense, led by goalkeeper
Carson Thomson-Terrel, stood strong as she tallied four saves on the day. Torres kept Sonoma State from taking the lead despite their 18-shot effort, five of which were on target.
The Seawolves edged the 'Jacks in overall offensive production, outshooting Humboldt 18-10, but the 'Jacks were more accurate, landing seven shots on frame compared to Sonoma's five. Sonoma State also held the advantage in corner kicks with 10, including eight in the second half, but Humboldt's defense held firm.
Both teams saw players receive yellow cards late in the first half, with Sonoma State's Hailey Freeman and Cal Poly Humboldt's
Nicole Beauchemin getting cautions in the 41st minute. Humboldt's
Frida Duran Arellano was also booked in the 85th minute.
With this result, Cal Poly Humboldt moves to 3-3-1 on the season. The 'Jacks will look to build on this performance as they return home to host their first CCAA conference game next week.
