'Jacks Fall to Cougars in Season Opener

ARCATA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt Women's Soccer opened their season from College Creek Field on Thursday afternoon against non-conference opponent Azusa Pacific (APU). The 'Jacks fell to the Cougars with a final score of 3-1. Frida Duran Arellano scored the lone goal for Humboldt off a corner kick assist from Emilie Wallin

"Azusa was a better team than us today," said head coach Grant Landy. "Having said that, we can't allow the goals we gave up today if we want to compete against teams of their caliber. The second half got better so that's a good sign moving forward."

The game kicked off with both teams battling for control. APU's Avery Guiel opened the scoring early in the 4th minute, putting the Cougars ahead 1-0. Cal Poly Humboldt's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel, managed to fend off several more attempts from APU, including a crucial save in the 10th minute.

Despite multiple substitutions, the Lumberjacks struggled to find their rhythm, ending the first half trailing by one goal.

The second half saw a renewed effort from Cal Poly Humboldt, but it was APU's Guiel who struck again in the 47th minute, extending the lead to 2-0. The Lumberjacks responded with a strong offensive push, resulting in a goal by Frida Duran Arellano in the 55th minute, assisted by Emilie Wallin off a corner kick, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.

The momentum, however, shifted back to APU, as Hailey Hilton netted a third goal for the Cougars in the 63rd minute, assisted by Madison Woodward. Despite Cal Poly Humboldt's continued comeback effort, they were unable to close the gap.

Looking Ahead

Cal Poly Humboldt will aim to bounce back as they prepare for their next match of the Humboldt Kickoff Classic on Saturday against Seattle Pacific. The Lumberjacks are scheduled to kickoff against the Falcons at 11:30 AM. Be sure to checkout the new hospitality area, as concessions and ice cold beverages will be available for purchase!
