MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Cal Poly Humboldt men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Oregon for the Mike Johnson Classic on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Ash Creek Preserve in Monmouth, Ore. The women's 6K race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 11:45 a.m. The Mike Johnson Classic offers a challenging and scenic course along Ash Creek Preserve's rolling grass trails, providing a test of both speed and endurance against a strong field of competitors.

LAST TIME OUT

Humboldt opened its 2025 season at the Jim Hunt Humboldt Invitational on Sept. 13 at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville, Calif., and put forth strong performances on both the men's and women's sides.

On the women's side, Lex Craven led the Lumberjacks with a second-place finish timing in at 23:03.72, just behind race winner Alyssa Johnson of Southern Oregon. Junior Brinna Weiseth (23:31.32) and Charlotte Leonard (23:42.34) followed in fourth and sixth, while Katelyn Touchet (ninth) and Lyla Fedio (11th) rounded out Humboldt's scoring five. Freshmen Maddie McKenna (19th) and Izzi Peila (20th) added depth to the squad, helping the Lumberjacks secure the team title with 32 points, well ahead of Southern Oregon (58) and SF State (62).

The men's squad placed second overall with 31 points. Junior Jacob Christopher paced Humboldt with a third-place finish in 25:21.76, while freshman Nicholas Woolery and junior Elias Wiggins took sixth and seventh with identical times of 26:02. Sophomore Daniel Shaver (13th) completed the scoring five, with sophomore Trevor Stewart close behind in 14th. Southern Oregon beat Humboldt for the team title by just five points, totaling 26 points to Humboldt's 31, with Oregon Tech finishing third (65).

The Mike Johnson Classic will give the Lumberjacks another chance to showcase their depth against a competitive field. Both teams will aim to carry the momentum from the Jim Hunt Invitational and refine their strategies as they prepare for the early stages of CCAA competition.
