MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Cal Poly Humboldt men's cross country team faced off against strong regional competition at the Mike Johnson Classic on Saturday morning in Monmouth, Oregon. The meet featured top NCAA Division II programs and served as a mid-season test for the Lumberjacks.
MEN'S 8K
The Humboldt men placed fifth overall in a 13-team field, scoring 177 points. Junior Jacob Christopher led the way for the Jacks, finishing 23rd overall with a time of 24:39.40.
Humboldt's next four scorers crossed the line within just 24 seconds of each other, showing a tight pack in the middle of the race. Junior Elias Wiggins placed just inside the top 50 at 25:27.40, followed by senior Michael Sides (25:43.30), freshman Spencer Borin (25:48.90), and freshman Nicholas Woolery rounding out the scoring five at 25:51.40.
The team finished fifth behind No. 7 Chico State (34 points) and Northwest Nazarene (40 points), but ahead of several strong regional squads.
"This team finishing in fifth-place amongst top teams in the NCAA West region was exciting to watch", says head coach Scott Pesch. "We had some standout performances from [Christopher] and [Wiggins] and we were very impressed with the depth of the team and good races overall."
UP NEXT
The Lumberjacks will return to action on Friday, Oct. 10, traveling to the San Francisco State Invitational at Golden Gate Park for another key competition as they continue building toward the CCAA Championships.
