Lumberjacks Look to Capitalize on Final NCAA Qualifying Opportunity at Franson Last Chance

AZUSA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt women's track & field teams will travel to Azusa, Calif. this week to compete in the Franson Last Chance Meet, hosted by Azusa Pacific University from May 7-9 at Cougar Athletic Stadium.

The meet serves as one of the final opportunities for athletes across Division II to improve marks, solidify national rankings, and chase qualifying standards ahead of NCAA postseason selections. The three-day meet is expected to feature elite competition from across all collegiate levels, along with professional athletes competing in one of the premier late-season meets on the West Coast.

Coming off historic performances at the CCAA Championships, the Lumberjacks will look to carry momentum into one final high-level competition against many of the top athletes in the region and country.

LAST TIME OUT

Cal Poly Humboldt is coming off one of its strongest collective performances at the CCAA Championships since joining the conference, highlighted by conference titles, school records, NCAA Division II provisional marks, and multiple podium finishes.

The Lumberjacks turned in a strong championship performance, finishing fifth overall with 65 points.

Isabel Perez-Zoghbi led the way with a pair of CCAA titles, winning the 3,000m steeplechase in 10:42.59 before capturing gold in the 800m with a winning time of 2:08.00. Perez-Zoghbi was also named the CCAA Elite 13 Award recipient for excellence in academics and athletics.

The Lumberjacks made history in the women's 4x100 relay as Kelsi Lytle, Caitlyn Dougherty, Brielle Jimerson, and Mia Roberts broke the school record with an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time of 46.34 while earning silver medals.

Dougherty also claimed silver in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.89, while Lily Shadden earned the first podium finish of her conference career with a runner-up finish in the high jump at 1.63m.

In the throws, Laura White (11.84m), Isabella Claussen (11.68m), and Sophie Coil (11.53m) all scored in the shot put to add key points for the Lumberjacks.

FRANSON LAST CHANCE

The Franson Last Chance Meet annually attracts many of the top NCAA Division I and II athletes looking for one final opportunity to improve qualifying marks before national selections are finalized.

The meet is designed specifically to provide optimal postseason qualifying conditions, including pacing lights, evening distance races, professional pacing opportunities, and a newly resurfaced Beynon track surface. The meet will also feature live streaming coverage through FloTrack across all three days of competition.

For Humboldt, the meet presents a major opportunity for athletes currently sitting near NCAA qualifying cutoffs to strengthen their national standing, while others will look to cap off strong seasons with personal bests and program marks.

The Lumberjacks will rely on strong performances from their nationally competitive sprint, middle-distance, jumps, and throws groups as they continue building on one of the most successful seasons in recent program history.
