Pontoni snaps tie, Jacks' losing streak

ARCATA - Karen Pontini's goal with 10 minutes left was the difference as Humboldt State defeated Cal Poly Pomona 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday.

With the win, the Jacks ended their four-game losing streak and improved to 7-6-1 overall and 3-5-1 in CCAA play. The Broncos dropped to 6-5-2 and 3-5-1 in the CCAA.

"Overall, it was a great team effort, especially getting our first come from behind victory of the season," said HSU head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. "This game had a lot of similarities to our game Sunday against UC San Diego."

After a slow first half, things picked up in the second 45 minutes of action. Just two minutes in the Broncos broke the deadlock as Mary Carroll took a pass from Brittany Garrett and put it into the wide open net.

"We put together a solid first half," said Cumbo. "However, the first 15-20 minutes of the second half we came out flat."

After going a goal down, the Jacks responded quickly, putting immediate pressure on Broncos keeper Amanda Cunningham.

The Jacks leveled the score at one on an own goal when a Pontoni throw in took a deflection off of a Cal Poly defender and trickled into the goal in the 66th minute.

The Jacks went ahead 15 minutes later when Pontoni took a pass from Danielle Drucker and beat Cunningham to the far post.

Cal Poly Pomona had chances to score during the final minutes of the game, but HSU keeper Kelly Sandberg and the Jacks defense stood strong. Sandberg finished the game with four saves.

"I think this was one of Kelly's best games," said Cumbo. "She didn't especially have a lot to do, but she was very vocal and organized her defense extremely well tonight."

Humboldt State will return to the field Sunday when Cal State San Bernardino comes to Arcata. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m in the Redwood Bowl.
