ARCATA — Allison Lawrence drove home a rebounded shot with just over a minute remaining in the second overtime, lifting Humboldt State to a 1-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game played Sunday.

Lawrence's late heroics helped Humboldt State improve to 8-6-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino fell to 7-4-3 and is now 5-3-2 in league games.

Following an epic struggle that failed to produce a score, the Jacks put together a frenzied attack in front of the Coyotes goal in the waning moments. Katie Forba had her shot deflected to teammate Kim Carroll, whose header attempt was also blocked, this time falling into perfect position for Lawrence near the left post.

"We weathered the storm early today," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said, after watching his team outshoot a determined CSUSB squad by only two, 16-14. "Our back line did a great job and (goalkeeper) Kelly (Sandberg) had some outstanding saves, especially in the overtime."

Sandberg's leaping tip of a high ball during the second overtime barely cleared the crossbar, preventing a CSUSB win. Sandberg finished the game with five saves, while the Coyotes' Leslie Rhodes was just as solid on the other end, totaling eight.

Also key to HSU's success was its midfield play, anchored by Katie Forba making her first appearance in the position.  "Katie did a great job of dribbling through and keeping it under control in the middle," Cumbo said.

Humboldt State continues its homestand with a single game this week, taking on Sonoma State on Sunday.
