Single game gives Jacks a chance to focus

ARCATA – With the  highs and lows of last week behind them, the Humboldt State men's soccer team only has to prepare for  one team this week. That team, No. 17 ranked Sonoma State, offers another tough test when they face that Jacks Sunday at 3 p.m. in Redwood Bowl.

Head-to-Head: After the 2-2 tie Sept. 24, Sonoma State holds a 17-24-5 all-time record against Humboldt State.

Cumbo's Comments: “It's nice to have a week where we can prepare for one team,” said Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “(Sonoma State) is extremely deep and that means we need to start fast and dictate the momentum of the game if we want to be successful against them.”

Lumberjacks Notes: With the split this weekend, the Jacks now stand 7-4-4 overall and 2-4-3 in the CCAA, which places them fourth in the North Division and nine points behind Chico State for the final spot in the postseason tournament. ...A few players are still trying to shake off nagging injuries. Midfielder Tony Ramirez made a brief appearance in the second half Friday against Cal Poly Pomona. Defender Jordan Anderson missed the second half of both games this past weekend with shin splints. Both will be evaluated within the next few days to determine their status for Sunday's game.  ...Midfielder E.J. Schneekluth, who has scored two goals and tallied one assist this season, will miss Sunday's game against Sonoma State due to yellow card accumulation. ...With his game-winner Friday, forward Matt Colwell tied midfielder Josh Suggs for the team lead with five goals, which ranks both of them eighth in the CCAA. Suggs is still ranked at the top of the conference's shot chart, trailing only Sonoma State's Ross Middlemiss in shots and shots per game. ...With his team-high 15 points, Colwell ranks in a tie for seventh in the CCAA. ...Forward Roland Demombynes, along with Colwell, leads the team with five assists, ranking them in a tie for fifth. ...Goalkeeper Drew Ryan continues to have a stellar senior campaign, recording a 1.00 goals against average, ranks fourth in the CCAA with a .843 save percentage, leads the CCAA with 75 saves and is second in saves per game with 5.36.

Opponents Notes: The Seawolves stand at 11-2-2 overall and lead the CCAA's North Division with a 6-1-2 record, two points ahead of Chico State. ...The No. 17 nationally ranked Seawolves were also ranked No. 3 in last week's NSCAA/adidas West Region poll behind Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills. If there is a weak spot in the Seawolves' resume, it would be their record on the road, with both their losses away from home. ...The conference's best attack is led by Arcata native Ross Middlemiss, who is continuing to light up the scoresheet this season. The senior forward scored four goals, a Sonoma State single-game record, Friday against Cal State San Bernardino, giving him 16 for the season, twice as many as anybody in the CCAA and good for the top spot in the West Region. Middlemiss also leads the CCAA and West Region with 36 points this season. For his efforts this past weekend, Middlemiss was awarded the Brine/CCAA Player of the Week honor for the second time this season. ...Forward Eric Lafon is second on the team with 17 points, good for a tie for third in the CCAA, and his six goals ranks in a tie for fourth in the conference. ...Just behind Lafon is senior forward Andrew Bailey, who has 15 points, tied for seventh in the conference with HSU's Matt Colwell, and is tied for the conference lead with teammate Cam Vickers with seven assists. ...In goal, senior Brooke Johnson ranks fifth in the CCAA with a .79 goals against average and is tied for second in the conference with six shutouts.
