One more roadtrip remains for men's squad

ARCATA – The final roadtrip of the season awaits the Humboldt State men's soccer team after a disappointing performance against Sonoma State Sunday. The Jacks first travel to San Francisco State to face the Gators at 12:30 p.m. Friday. HSU then travels further south to face Cal State Monterey Bay at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Head-to-Head: After their 2-1 win over San Francisco State earlier this season, the Jacks now hold a 29-21-7 all-time record against the Gators. ...With the scoreless draw on Sept. 19, the Jacks' record against Cal State Monterey Bay now stands at 2-3-1.

Cumbo's Comments: “Even though we took a step backwards against Sonoma, we just have to continue to make progress every game,“ Humboldt State men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo said. “We need to learn from what happened Sunday and try and defend well for the entire 90 minutes and capitalize on our opportunities.”

Lumberjacks Notes: With the loss to Sonoma State Sunday, the Jacks now stand 7-5-4 overall and their 2-4-3 in the CCAA puts them in fifth place in the North Division. ...This weekend the Jacks will look to improve on their 1-2-4 record away from the friendly confines of Redwood Bowl. ...Injuries are still playing a part with some key players, including midfielders Ben Vasser, who will miss Friday's game due to yellow card accumulation, and Tony Ramirez and defender Jordan Anderson. All three are still hampered by injuries. ...Forward Matt Colwell and midfielder Josh Suggs continue to lead the Jacks with five goals apiece. Colwell is ranked eighth in the CCAA with 15 points and also tied with fellow forward Roland Demombynes with five assists this season, which ranks the two in a tie for seventh in the CCAA, while Suggs ranks behind only Ross Middlemiss of Sonoma State in shots (55) and shots per game (3.44). ...Goalkeeper Drew Ryan has seen his goals against average rise to 1.26 after seeing five goals go past him against Sonoma State. Ryan still leads the CCAA in saves (82) and saves per game (5.47) and is sixth in both save percentage (.812) and shutouts with four. Entering last Sunday's game against Sonoma State, Ryan was ranked No. 13 nationally in save percentage (.843).

Opponent's Notes:  San Francisco State enters its final week of the season 7-8-2 overall and 4-7-1 in the CCAA after losing a pair of games to Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State 2-1 and 2-0, respectively. ...The Gators have been extremely tough to beat at home of late, going undefeated in their last five games. Their last loss at home was a 4-1 decision to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 14. ...Freshman forward Antonio Ugarte continues to pace the Gators' offense, scoring five goals, He is tied with fellow forward Dylan Glass with 11 points on the season. Glass also ranks fourth in the CCAA with three game-winning goals, eighth in shots (41) and ninth in shots per game (2.41). ...Freshman defender Charles Conway leads the Gators in assists with four. ...In goal, Israel Cisneros has started all but two games this season, recording a 1.24 goals against average and ranking fourth in the CCAA with 60 saves. ...Cal State Monterey Bay comes into this week after completing its first weekend sweep of 2008, beating Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1 in double-overtime and 1-0, respectively. For the season, the Otters are 3-9-4 overall and 3-6-3 in the CCAA, placing them three points ahead of Humboldt State in the North Division with 12 points. ...Scoring goals has been a problem for the Otters this season, who have been outscored by their opponents 24-15 in 16 games. Forwards Nathan Toricelli and Andy Binol,  and defender Nick McGill lead the Otters with three goals and seven points this season, while midfielder Grant Robson leads the team with three assists. ...Goalkeeper Brenden Baca has started 13 of CSUMB's 16 games this season, recording a 1.07 goals against average while ranking fourth in save percentage (.829) and second behind HSU's Drew Ryan in saves (68) and saves per game (5.23).
