CSUDH drops Lumberjacks, 2-0

CARSON – Outshot 26-3, the Humboldt State women's soccer team lost its third straight game, falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Friday.

The Jacks dropped to 6-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the CCAA while the Toros, ranked No. 6 in the West Region, improved to 7-5 and 5-2 in the CCAA.

“We got out to a good start the first 15 minutes,” said HSU head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “However, we came out flat in the second half and (Dominguez Hills) took advantage of it.”

CSUDH scored what eventually would be the game winner in the 32nd minute when Melanie DeSalvo recovered a lose ball in the Humboldt State penalty area.

“The forward got free and it caused some of our defenders to be in the wrong spots,” said Cumbo.

The Toros continued to pressure the Jacks throughout the game, with HSU failing to record a shot the entire second half.

CSUDH doubled its lead with 20 minutes to go when Jessica Murphy was on the end of a Yvone Vasquez cross, beating HSU keeper Kelly Sandberg at her near post.

The Jacks look to end their three-game skid when they face UC San Diego Sunday. Kickoff in La Jolla is scheduled for noon.
