LA JOLLA – Surrendering three goals in the span of 14 minutes proved hard to overcome, as Humboldt State lost to UC San Diego, 3-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Sunday.
The Jacks have now lost four-straight and stand 6-6-2 overall and 2-4-2 in CCAA play. The Tritons improved to 9-2-1 and 6-2-0 in the CCAA.
“Considering we had lost three straight coming into today, I was pleased the we came out and played well the first 45 minutes,” said HSU head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “We made mistakes in the second half and good teams will punish you for that.”
The Jacks had a golden opportunity to open the scoring 15 minutes in when
Allison Lawrence chipped over UCSD keeper Jessica McGovern but hit the crossbar. Lawrence got her own rebound, but again hit the woodwork, this time the near post.
Kim Carroll got the rebound, but saw her shot blocked.
The game remind scoreless until the 66th minute when HSU midfielder
Gracie Gartrell's attempt to shield the ball for a goal kick failed. UC San Diego's Alexia Zatarain, who stole the ball from Gartrell, passed it Sarah Motigue, who scored from 20 yards out.
The Tritons doubled their lead seven minutes later when Natasha Belak-Berger beat an HSU defender and chipped the ball over goalkeeper
Kelly Sandberg.
With 10 minutes remaining UC San Diego scored its third goal of the afternoon Laura Bornstein, who also recorded the assist on the Triton's second goal, beat Sandberg at her near post.
The Jacks will return home looking to end their four-game winless streak when they face Cal Poly Pomona at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Redwood Bowl.
