Late goals rescue Jacks on senior day

ARCATA — Kim Carroll powered the winning shot off the post, completing Humboldt State's 3-2 comeback victory over Cal State Stanislaus with only 1 minute, 36 seconds remaining in regulation Sunday.

Carroll's heroics helped the Lumberjacks end their season on a positive note, evening their overall record at 9-9-2 and lifting them to 5-7-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The sophomore forward also scored the Jacks' first goal of the game and assisted on the tying score.

Six HSU seniors were honored prior to the contest, but the emotion didn't successfully carry over into the game's opening minutes. Cal State Stanislaus was quick to capitalize when only 42 seconds in, Adrienne Sorenson broke past a defender and sent the ball into the net after HSU keeper Allyson Riggs was unable to corral her first shot.

Five minutes later, the Warriors struck again on another HSU defensive breakdown. This time, Riggs was able to get her hands on Gennaka Fox's line drive shot, only to lose her grip and drop it into the goal.

Carroll cut the Warriors' advantage before the half when she took a through-ball played by Kayla Welbanks and sent it home. Carroll also had a touch on a loose ball in the six-yard box that Gracie Gartrell pounded in to tie the game at 2-2 with just over three minutes left to play.

Humboldt State was the aggressor for most of the game, outshooting Cal State Stanislaus 18-11. Warriors' goalkeeper Jessica Sitarz finished with three saves, while Riggs and Kelly Sandberg each had two for HSU.

Cal State Stanislaus ended its season with a 8-7-4 oveall record, and posted a 4-7-3 mark in league games.
