MONMOUTH, Ore. – The 2008 Humboldt State women's soccer season opened with a tough 2-1 loss in double overtime against Western Oregon on Thursday.
 
“The loss is obviously frustrating,” Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo said. “But the team played well through adversity and I'm pleased with how they came back.”
 
Western Oregon opened the scoring in the 26th minute on a goal by Melinda Ingalls. HSU  battled back throughout the game and had numerous opportunities to hit the back of the net. The Jacks' efforts were finally rewarded in the 82nd minute when sophomore midfielder Anna Erway recorded her first collegiate goal.
 
The game remained tied until Western Oregon broke through with three minutes remaining in double overtime on a shot from just outside the penalty box. Jordann Gilmer's attempt beat Jacks' keeper Kelly Sandberg at the far post, providing the game-winner.
 
“We just gave her too much time with the ball and she put it away,” said Cumbo.
 
Western Oregon outshot the Jacks 22-16.
 
The Jacks will try to earn a split of their roadtrip when they play Central Washington in Monmouth on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
 
“We were dynamic and dangerous and had all the opportunities we needed to win, but just didn't convert,” said Cumbo. “No big changes need to be made going into Saturday.”
