Offense can't connect in 1-0 loss to CWU

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team lost its second consecutive game to open the season, a 1-0 decision to Central Washington Saturday in Monmouth.

The Jacks are now 0-2 while Central Washington recorded its first win of the season and evened its record at 1-1.

“It's tough to go on the road the opening weekend but we did it so we can learn what kind of team we are,” said head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo.

The Wildcats broke the deadlock just after halftime in the 46th minute when freshman Serena Tomaso took a pass from Hillary Franks and beat HSU keeper Kelly Sandberg to score the lone goal of the game.

It was more of the same for the Jacks as there were opportunities to score, but the finishing touch was lost. Despite only recording four shots, two of which were on goal, the Jacks still did not take advantage of scoring opportunities.

Sandberg, who has been playing very well to begin the season, recorded three saves. Central Washington keeper Amber Esterbrook registered two saves.

In the closing moments of the game, sophomore forward Kim Carroll had a breakaway, but could not even the score at one, shooting the ball over the goal.

“We had the kind of opportunities again but we just didn't finish,” said Cumbo. “But sometimes in this game it happens. I'm not worried because we are making progress and things tend to change over the course of a season.”

The Jacks will open their 2008 home schedule on Monday against the Academy of Art. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday in the Redwood Bowl.
