Women earn tough scoreless draw with Wildcats

CHICO – In a battle of old rivals to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play, the Humboldt State women's soccer team earned a tough 0-0 draw in double overtime against No. 8 regionally ranked Chico State Sunday.

With the result, both teams now stand at 4-2-1 and 0-0-1 in CCAA.

“The girls did well today and played with lots of energy throughout the game,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “We executed our game plan very well against a program that is always tough to play, it's a good result.”

Although the Wildcats recorded 17 shots in the game, Jacks' keeper Kelly Sandberg was called into action eight times. Her two saves in the first overtime period kept HSU alive.

“We obviously came here to get points (in the league standings). We wanted three, but I'm happy that we still got one,” said Cumbo.

The Jacks return to Arcata to host a pair of CCAA opponents this weekend. Up first will be Cal State Monterey Bay Friday at 4:30 p.m.
