CCAA action continues with two home games

ARCATA – Coming off of a disappointing 2-0 loss to Chico State in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener, the Humboldt State men's soccer team will look to claim its first conference win this weekend when Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State come to Arcata. Kickoff Friday against the Otters will be at 7 p.m. and Sunday against the Gators at 2 p.m. in Redwood Bowl.

Head-to-Head: Cal State Monterey Bay holds a 2-3-0 all-time record against Humboldt State, with the Otters winning both games last season, 3-1 and 3-0, respectively. ...HSU holds a 28-21-7 all-time record over San Francisco State, with the Jacks and Gators splitting a pair of match-ups last season.

Cumbo's Comments: “We found out against Chico that there is still work to be done,” said Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “Maintaining possession and being defensively organized for 90 minutes will be the key against two teams that are hungry to get their first win in conference play.”

Lumberjacks Notes: Before the loss to Chico State Sunday, the Jacks had gotten off to the best start in program history with a 3-0-1 record. ...The Jacks have been led offensively by forward Matt Colwell, a junior from Arcata, who has scored three goals and eight total points. Colwell is in a tie for sixth in the CCAA in goals and is also tied for sixth in points. ...Fellow forward Roland Demombynes, a junior from Seattle, Wash., returned from an ankle injury to score the first goal and assist on the second  Friday against Saint Martin's. ...Midfielder Josh Suggs, a sophomore from Las Cruces, N.M., still ranks fourth in the CCAA in shots and third in shots per game. ...Defender Ray Lind, a sophomore from Seattle, Wash., saw his first action of the season against Chico State and made an immediate impact, according to Cumbo. ...Giving up his first three goals of the season has seen HSU keeper Drew Ryan's goals against average rise to .57, good for fifth in the CCAA. The senior from Carmichael leads the CCAA in saves with 25 and is second in both save percentage (.893) and shutouts (3).

Opponent's Notes: Cal State Monterey Bay enters Friday's game against the Lumberjacks looking for its first win of the season after going 0-4-1 overall and 0-2 in CCAA play in the first five games of the year. This past weekend, CSUMB lost a pair of CCAA contests, 1-0 to No. 7 nationally ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills and 2-1 to No. 4 regionally ranked UC San Diego. ...Nick McGill, a senior from Bakersfield, has scored the only goal on the season for the Otters, who have been outscored by their opponents 6-1 this season. The Otters ranked last in the CCAA in almost every offensive category this season. However, with all its offensive struggles, CSUMB is in the middle of the pack in the CCAA defensively. In goal, Brenden Baca, a junior from Solvang, and Sammy Campbell, a sophomore from Palmdale, have split time this season, with Baca playing the majority of the minutes. Baca has the better goals against average (.84) in 320 minutes, but Campbell started the most recent game against UC San Diego and has a 1.80 goals against average in his three appearances this season. ...San Francisco State enters this week 2-3-1 on the year and 0-2 in CCAA play. The Gators were ranked No. 10 in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas poll. This past weekend SFSU lost a 1-0 and 4-1 to UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills. ...The Gators are paced offensively by forward Antonio Ugarte, a freshman from Danville, who has scored three goals on the season, which puts him in a tie for sixth in the CCAA. ...Midfielder Wes Whitt, a junior from Alpine, leads the team with three assists, which ranks him in a tie for third in the CCAA. ...Goalkeeper Israel Cisneros, a junior from Watsonville, has played all but nine minutes in goal this season. He has recorded a 1.58 goals against average and his 20 saves puts him in a tie for third in the conference. ...Before facing the Jacks, the Gators will travel to Rohnert Park to play Sonoma State on Friday.
