ARCATA — Slick passing and solid ball control led Humboldt State to a 2-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game Friday.
Sophomore forward
Kim Carroll figured in both of the Jacks' scores, assisting on the first and adding a late goal of her own to seal the win. HSU improved its record to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the CCAA, while CSUMB dropped to 0-6-1 and 0-3-0.
An aggressive attack found the Jacks swarming the CSUMB goal through much of the first half, but the result was several missed opportunities. Persistence paid off, however, when Carroll played the ball through to the streaking
Allison Lawrence, who sent it skidding past the Otters' keeper 17 minutes after the break.
"The way we had been playing, we knew (the goal) was coming," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. "I told the players at halftime to keep doing what we were doing and we'd be okay."
Carroll connected for the Jacks' second score with only two minutes remaining in the game, heading the ball into the goal off of
Karen Pontoni's throw-in. Her third goal of the season improved Carroll's point total to eight, just behind Lawrence's team-leading nine.
"That first goal was critical," Cumbo said. "We got it early enough that we didn't have to go down to the wire looking for a score."
Kelly Sandberg earned her fourth shutout in goal for the Jacks, coming up with four saves, including two spectacular stops in the second half. CSUMB's Stephanie Husted, who replaced injured starter Graciela Holguin 30 minutes into the game, also finished with four saves.
HSU is back in Redwood Bowl on Sunday, hosting San Francisco State at 11:30 a.m. as the top half of a doubleheader that finishes with the two schools' men's teams facing off.
