HSU women squeeze past SFSU

HSU players celebrate No. 11 Kelsey Gomula's game -winner.
ARCATA — Kelsey Gomula's successful penalty kick kept Humboldt State from near disaster, lifting the Lumberjacks over San Francisco State, 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Sunday.

Stretching its unbeaten streak to seven, HSU improved to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the CCAA. San Francisco State dropped to 3-4-1 and 2-2-0 in league.

Humboldt State held a 1-0 lead through the majority of the well-played battle, but the Gators drew even with only seven minutes remaining. SFSU's Robin Bowman emerged from traffic in front of the Jacks' goal, booting home the tying goal after gathering a rebound.

"We showed good composure after they scored the equalizer," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. "Our players are very confident on their home field."

San Francisco State tried to capitalize on the momentum shift, but with four minutes remaining Humboldt State managed to clear a ball downfield. HSU's Allison Lawrence broke ahead of the Gators' defense, and dribbled quickly toward the goal before she was taken down from behind in the box by a pair of SFSU defenders.

Awarded a penalty kick on the foul, the Lumberjacks selected Kelsey Gomula to take the shot. The defender from San Diego sent a low drive past SFSU keeper Rachel Lauderdale for the eventual game-winner.

HSU had gained the early lead when Sarah Nakamoto sent a long ball from near midfield over the top of the defense. The kick also sailed over the head of Lauderdale, who recovered to grab it too late after the ball broke the plane of the goal.

Humboldt State goalkeeper Kelly Sandberg had three saves against the Gators, who managed one more shot than the Jacks at 8-7.

Next up for the Lumberjacks is Wednesday's game against Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, followed by a home game against Cal State Los Angeles in Redwood Bowl on Friday.
